CRAFTS FOR GRADE 3
THE BÁB JOYFULLY SACRIFICED HIS LIFE AS HE PREPARED THE WAY FOR THE COMING OF BAHÁ’U’LLÁH
LESSON 16
Fortress Pop-Up Card
- Supplies: Construction paper, scissors, glue, markers, ruler.
- Instructions: Create a pop-up card of the fortress of Máh-Kú or Chihríq. Have the kids draw and colour the fortress on the card’s base and create a pop-up structure inside. Add small details like guards or gates.
Journey Map
- Supplies: Large paper, crayons/coloured pencils, stickers.
- Instructions: Let the children design a simple map showing the Báb’s journey from one location to another (Tabríz, Máh-Kú, Chihríq). They can mark and decorate key places with symbols, such as stars and dotted lines for routes.
Anís’ Vision Spinner
- Supplies: Cardstock, markers, string, hole punch, glue.
- Instructions: Create a spinning craft with two circles. On one side, kids draw Anís in prayer; on the other side, they depict his vision of the Báb. Attach the circles with string and spin to see both images in motion.
Cup of Martyrdom
- Supplies: Paper, markers, scissors.
- Instructions: Make an accordion-fold booklet. Each panel depicts a key moment in the story, ending with the promise the Báb made to Anís.
- Mosaic
- Scroll
- Maze
- Flipbook
Symbolic Mosaic Art
- Supplies: Colored paper, glue, and a base template.
- Instructions: Create a mosaic using symbolic images like a fort, a lamp (for guidance), or stars (for inspiration). Kids arrange small paper pieces to form the mosaic while reflecting on its meaning.
Hanging Scroll of Reflections
- Supplies: Paper, string, markers, and tape.
- Instructions: Make a vertical hanging scroll with sections that fold out. Each section can contain a reflection question or lesson from the story.
Path to the Fortress Maze
- Supplies: Paper, pencil, and markers (or Canva templates).
- Instructions: Kids design and solve a maze with the goal of reaching the fortress. The maze can symbolize the challenges faced by the Báb and His followers.
Flipbook Animation
- Supplies: Index cards or small pieces of paper, markers, and a stapler.
- Instructions: Create a flipbook showing a simple animation, like a crowd forming or a light spreading from a central point, symbolizing the growing influence of the Báb’s message.
Sliding Scene Reveal
Supplies: Paper, markers, scissors, tape, and a ruler.
Instructions: Create a sliding craft with two layers of paper. The top layer has slits, and when pulled, it reveals an illustration or message beneath. For this story, the sliding part could reveal symbolic images, like a fortress or a crowd.
Spin-and-Learn Wheel
- Supplies: Cardstock, brads, scissors, markers.
- Instructions: Make a circular spinner divided into sections, each with a question or fun fact about the story. The kids spin to land on different sections and learn as they go.
Interactive Timeline
- Supplies: Strips of paper, markers, and tape.
- Instructions: Create a pull-out timeline where kids can write key events in the story. The timeline can be folded accordion-style and pulled out from a decorated pocket.
Question-and-Answer Flap Book
- Supplies: Cardstock, glue, scissors, and markers.
Instructions: Design a question-and-answer book where kids lift the flaps to reveal answers related to the story, such as places the Báb visited or what happened at Tabríz
Light and Shadows Experiment
- Supplies: Flashlight, paper figures, cardboard fort (optional).
- Instructions: Let the kids explore how light casts shadows. Relate it to the story by explaining that even in the darkest places like Chihríq, the Báb’s light reaches everyone.
Magnetism Demo
- Supplies: Magnets, metal objects.
- Instructions: Use magnets to demonstrate how people are drawn to the Báb’s love and influence, just like metal is drawn to a magnet.
- DIORAMA
- Fortress
- City Scene
Diorama
The next few crafts are Dioramas. There are many YouTube videos like the one here.
Fortress Diorama
- Supplies: Shoebox, paper, glue, paint, markers, and small figurines or clay for symbolic elements (no people).
- Instructions: Create a 3D diorama of the fortress of Máh-Kú or Chihríq. Kids can include details like gates, towers, and landscapes. Add labels for educational value, such as “Guarded Entrance” or “Remote Location.”
City Scene Diorama
- Supplies: Cardboard, paper, glue, and craft sticks.
- Instructions: Depict the excitement in Tabríz when the Báb arrived. Use craft sticks or clay to make abstract shapes for the crowd or symbolic elements like gates and banners.
Weaving the Journey
- Supplies: Yarn, cardboard loom, and scissors.
- Instructions: Kids weave a small piece of cloth, with each section of yarn representing a part of the story (e.g., green for Máh-Kú, yellow for Tabríz, red for Chihríq).
Fortress Banner
- Supplies: Felt, fabric markers, glue, and string.
- Instructions: Create a group banner showing symbolic elements like fortresses, mountains, or stars. Use simple stitching or fabric glue to assemble the banner.
Embroidery of Symbols
- Supplies: Embroidery hoops, fabric, needles, and thread.
- Instructions: Kids stitch simple designs, such as a star, fortress, or pathway, to reflect on themes of light, guidance, and perseverance.
Storytelling Quilt
- Supplies: Fabric squares, markers, and fabric glue.
- Instructions: Each child decorates a fabric square with symbols or images related to the story. Combine the squares into a storytelling quilt to display in the classroom.
Role-Play the Meeting
- Supplies: No extra supplies are needed.
- Instructions: Divide kids into groups to act out the meeting between the religious authorities and the Báb. They can use simple lines from the script, emphasizing the Báb’s calm majesty and the authorities’ reactions.
Message Relay Game
- Supplies: Pieces of paper, pencil.
- Instructions: Write short phrases from the Báb’s declaration on separate pieces of paper. Form two teams, and have them relay the message, one word at a time. Emphasize the importance of His words.
- CIRCUIT
- Fortress
- Pathway
Paper Circuit
Paper circuits are made with just a few simple items; you can use a battery and some copper tape to add tiny lights to your project.
Fortress Light-Up Display
Supplies: Cardboard, LED lights, coin cell batteries, copper tape, scissors.
Instructions: Create a flat or 3D model of the fortress, adding LEDs to represent the “light of the Cause” shining even in remote places. Place the lights in windows or along the fortress walls.
City Scene Diorama
- Supplies: Conductive paint or tape, LEDs, batteries, cardstock.
- Instructions: Design a path (like the journey to the fortress) with LEDs lighting up as the “light” progresses. Kids connect parts of the circuit to complete it and illuminate different points on the map.
