This lesson is all about living in Harmony, and about the importance of unity to help us achieve the ideal living space not just in our homes, but worldwide.

All the people of the world were created by one God, and all are His servants. We all breathe the same air, live on the same earth, and receive light and warmth from the same sun. We are all part of one human family. And just like a garden bursting with flowers of every shape and color, humanity is made up of peoples of different colors and races, different talents and capacities, which are harmonized in a beautiful whole. The great diversity of the human family can be likened to the many notes that come together in a delightful melody. A melody with only one note repeated over and over is not pleasing to the ear; it is dull and monotonous. So it is with the diversity of the human race; when the diverse people of the world come together in unity, the true strength and potential of humanity can be seen.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá showed us through His words and actions how we can build unity. His home was often full of people from different parts of the world living happily in one household, and wherever He went, He insisted that gatherings include everyone who wished to join, bringing all together in harmony and never allowing differences to separate people. He always reminded the friends that we are waves of one sea, grass in the same meadow, leaves on the same tree, united by the love of God. We see everyone as our brothers and sisters, and we treat every soul with kindness. If misunderstandings arise among us, we resolve them with friendliness, remembering our love for God and for each other. We avoid arguments and fights. Think of the human body; all the different parts work together to make it healthy and strong. In the same way, as we all work together, each doing our part, we see the power of unified action, and great things can be accomplished. To help us remember the importance of unity, let us memorize the following words of Bahá’u’lláh:

So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.

STORY RELATED TO LESSON
A Story OF ‘Abdu’l-Baha and unity

Throughout His life, ‘Abdu’l Baha brought all different kinds of people together- old and young, rich and poor, of all religions and backgrounds- and helped them to learn the ways of unity. Here is a story that shows how ‘Abdu’l-Baha brought two hearts together. 

Every day many people came to visit Abdu’l-Baha in His home, and He welcomed them all with open arms.  One day, a gentleman arrived at the house and was greeted warmly.  Sometime later, while this gentleman was still visiting with Abdu’l-Baha, a second man came to call, and he, too, was warmly welcomed.  Now, it so happened that these two gentlemen had had a disagreement, and they were not at all happy to see each other.  In fact, they did not even want to be in the same room together.  What would happen?  Both wanted to be with Abdu’l-Baha.  Would one of them decide to leave?

Abdu’l-Baha resolved the matter immediately.  He started by telling some funny stories, and before long, both men were laughing.  Then He said that His home was a home of peace and joy, a home of laughter and exultation.  He did not want them to leave with feelings of hatred in their hearts.  The gentlemen listened carefully, thinking about Abdu’l-Baha’s words.  After a while, Abdul-Baha gave them each some sweets and a silk handkerchief (HAVE SWEETS AND A SILK HANKY OUT AS PROPS).  These were to be, He indicated, a token of their pledge of friendship.  The two men smiled.  They recognized that it was God Who had directed their steps to Abdu’l-Baha’s home that day.  And they went away from Abdu’l-Baha’s presence joyful and full of laughter.

What do you take away from this story?

In following the ways of Abdu’l-Baha, we never allow differences to come between us, and, if misunderstandings ever arise, we think of our love for God and look for those things that unite us.

GAMES FOR GRADE 2 TO PLAY
DRAMA / GAMES
The activities that follow will help the children continue developing the skills and abilities of creative drama.

Ask your students to stand in their imaginary squares.  As you did in the previous lesson, have the children stand about 5 feet apart and imagine that they are in their own squares.  Ask them to walk along the border of his/her imaginary square.

Ask children to: raise up your arms and stretching from the tips of your toes to the tips of your fingers, reach towards the sky.  Now you are going to relax and let your arms and head hang freely.  Repeat this several times.

Now tell the children to stretch their arms out at shoulder length and rotate them slowly, making small circles.  Gradually the circles should become bigger and bigger.  As they do this exercise, their arms will feel heavier and heavier. Tell the children than when their arms feel very heavy, they should let them drop and shake them out.

For the next exercise, the children will remain in their imaginary squares.  Tell them to pretend they are doing the following: washing dishes, washing a dog, feeding chickens, carrying wood, planting seeds, picking a crop, pouring and drinking a glass of water.  (Call the actions out one at a time, giving the children a minute or so to improvise each)

Now have the children form a circle, sitting down, yourself among them.  Create a face- a happy face, a sad face, a frightened face.  Turn to one of the youngsters sitting next to you and pass the face on to that child.  He or she should assume the expression and pass it on to the next child, and so on.  You may do this several times, allowing a different children to create a face each time.

Now we are going to move on to the activities related to the theme of this lesson- the importance of living in unity.  Do you remember the analogy that was used earlier to describe the oneness of humanity?  It has to do with the human body.  What would happen if some of our fingers refused to grab on to something we needed to pick up?  What if each leg tried to walk in a different direction?  The next few activities will help us see what it means to be united.

 I am going to tell you a story about a hand whose fingers and thumb stopped working together, and I am going to ask you to ACT IT OUT SILENTLY WITH YOUR OWN HANDS as I tell it.  (HAVE PENCIL, PAPER, SPOON and SMALL BALL PROPS FOR EACH CHILD)

One day the fingers on Ramiro’s hand fought with the thumb. They decided that they didn’t like it, they didn’t need it, and they could manage fine without it.  That seemed a great idea to the thumb, who took advantage of the time to rest.  Meanwhile, the fingers began a new life.  But…when they tried to pick up a pencil, they had difficulty.  When they finally managed, it was even harder to write.  Neither could they hold the spoon easily when it was time to eat.  And buttoning up a shirt was impossible.  So they decided to play instead.  But, to their surprise, they couldn’t grab the ball.  Feeling sorry, they turned to their brother, the thumb, and asked him to join them again.  The thumb, who was bored being alone, did not have to think twice and gladly went back to his duties.

For this next activity, we will need to divide up into pairs.  One child from each pair will need to stand behind the other.  The child behind should be facing the back of his or her partner.  Each pair is going to act as one person.  The child in back will be the arms and the child in front will be the rest of the body.  The hands of the child in front should be placed behind his/her back, allowing the arms of the child behind to be extended, as though they were the arms of the front child (have a pair come up and demonstrate so everyone sees how to do it).

Now, each pair will first act out a situation in which the arms are not united in the rest of the body.  The child in front should describe what is happening to the body.  For example, he or she may say, “There is sun in my eyes, I need to protect them with my hand” or “My nose is itchy, I need to scratch it.”  The child behind should do something DIFFERENT from what the body has said, for example, wave his/her hand, fold his or her arms, or wiggle his/her fingers. 

Next, each pair is going to act IN HARMONY, with the arms doing the jobs the body needs them to do. 

Then allow children to SWAP ROLES, so each has a chance to pretend to be the arms.

Pass the face

Everyone sits in a large circle, one person makes a funny face and each person in turn, passes it along the circle. We had some great laughs!

We know that all the peoples of the world are meant to live in unity as one family. In a family, everyone is treated with fairness. We learn to find ways to work together for everyone’s benefit. The well-being of every member is connected to the well-being of the family as a whole. Should harm come to one member, all are affected. Similarly, we should be fair in our dealings with all those who cross our path, never taking advantage of anyone. We strive to show forth such fairness and justice in our daily lives that we become worthy of the trust and confidence of our fellow human beings.

Knowledge is essential for human progress. In order to build a better world, we must gain knowledge of the sciences and the arts. By applying what we learn, we are able to improve the quality of the food we grow, make advances in medicine that help us live healthier lives, discover ways to communicate with people in far-off places, and create
things that beautify the world. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá encourages learning about the sciences and arts, as well as acquiring spiritual knowledge that comes from the teachings of God.
These teachings give us a deeper understanding of the world around us and inspire us to use our knowledge for the benefit of others, to remove conflict and to promote cooperation and harmony.
Once, while speaking with a teacher from England, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá asked what subjects he taught in school. The gentleman told Him that he taught Latin, English, Algebra, and Geometry. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá then asked him if he also addressed spiritual matters in his classes. The gentleman replied that there was no time for spiritual education in school.
‘Abdu’l-Bahá made no comment, but He did not need to! From His question and His silence, the gentleman understood that both material and spiritual education are necessary for human advancement. Aware that most schools did not provide spiritual instruction, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá encouraged Bahá’í communities to establish regular classes for this
purpose. To help us remember how acquiring knowledge can help us contribute to the betterment of the world, let us memorize the following quotation:

We ask God to endow human souls with justice so that they may be fair, and may strive to provide for the comfort of all . . .

Conrad was easily frightened and lived in fear, but then a friend told him that God has endowed every human being with courage.  Conrad thought about this and decided that he would no longer be so afraid.

STORY RELATED TO LESSON
A Story of Abdu’l-Baha when He encountered injustice

To live in harmony with others, we strive to treat all people fairly, without thought of their religion or background, their age or circumstances.  Of course, there are times in our lives when we encounter injustice.  I am going to share a true story of Abdu’l-Baha when He encountered injustice, and we will learn from His example what to do about it.

In the days of Baha’u’llah and Abdu’l-Baha, the people of Akka had been misled about the Bahais and did not think they deserved to be treated fairly.  But Abdu’l-Baha, with His great wisdom and love, changed the hearts of many of these people.  He showed kindness to people of all religions and helped them become united.

There was a Christian merchant in Akka who, like his fellow citizens, did not respect the Bahais.  One day, outside the gates of the city, the merchant saw a camel load of charcoal that belonged to the Bahais. (HAVE CAMEL statue and pretend coal out as prop- can explain what charcoal was used for burning it for heat, etc.; If you want a prop, pretend coal can be bought at AMAZON. OR just use a piece of paper that is squished up!

He stopped the driver and said, “This is better charcoal than I can get!”  Without paying any money, he took the charcoal for himself.

When Abdu’l-Baha heard of this incident He went to the merchant’s shop to ask for the return of the charcoal.  There were many people in the office, and the merchant did not pay Him any attention.  Abdu’l-Baha sat there and waited patiently.  Finally, after three hours, the merchant turned to Him and asked coldly, “Are you one of the prisoners?  What have you done that you were imprisoned?”  Abdu’l-Baha replied that His crime was the same one for which Christ was persecuted. The merchant was surprised.  “What do you know about Christ?” he asked.  Then Abdu’l-Baha calmly and kindly began to talk to him about Christ and His teachings.  As Abdu’l-Baha spoke, the merchant’s heart began to melt, and his pride and arrogance disappeared.  At last, he explained to Abdu’l-Baha that unfortunately the charcoal was gone, but he would gladly pay for it.  Then Abdu’l-Baha rose and walked with Him to the street, treating Him with great respect and honor. 

What did you learn from the way that Abdu’l-Baha dealt with injustice?

Courage to confront it, but He also had patience, spirituality, calmness, kindness and love.  It says something very special in the Bahai Writings about love.  It says that love is “a most potent elixir that can transform the vilest and meanest of people into heavenly souls.”   

We can learn from Abdu’l-Baha’s example and strive to be like Him!

Ask children to: raise up their arms and stretch from the tips of their toes to the tips of their fingers, reaching towards the sky.  Now relax and let your arms and head hang freely.  Repeat this several times.

For this next exercise, the children will remain in their imaginary squares.  Ask them to create a shape with their bodies, using their heads, arms, and legs.  This is shape number 1.  Tell them to hold that shape for a few seconds.  Next, have them move into a second shape.  This is shape number 2.  Again have them hold the shape for a few seconds.  Now count- 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 as the children move from shape to shape.  Call freeze when children are in shape number 2.  Now ask the students to find a completely new shape.  This is shape number 3.  Have them hold it for a few seconds, and then go back to shape number 1.  Now count 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2, 1, 3- as the children move from shape to shape.  Call freeze when children are in the shape number

Finally, have the children create a fourth shape and ask them to hold it for a few seconds.  Then ask them to go back to shape number 1 and count, 1, 2, 3, 4 (mix it up) having children move from shape to shape.  Try to establish as rhythm as you count.

Now explain to the children that the same word can be said in different ways.  Depending on how we say it, the meaning changes.  Ask them to say the word “oh” as if… (you can have the following on slips of paper that the kids take turns pulling out of a bag and reading and then they tell them to the whole group for them to act out)

  • someone had stepped on their foot
  • they are sleepy
  • their mother is calling them to get up in the morning
  • someone is giving them a present
  • their father says he is going to take them fishing
  • he says they cannot go after all
  • they are invited to take a trip to the moon
  • they are petting a dog
  • they took a bit of something they did not like
  • they are running hard and are out of breath
  • their grandfather has just come to visit

Now you are going to invite the students to improvise the following story, related to today’s lesson, which is unity and fairness.  They will improvise the same situation twice.  The first time, the situation will end unfairly.  The second time, it will be resolved fairly.  As always, the children should be allowed to fill in the details of the story with their own imaginations. First, listen to the story and then act it out.  They can use fruit props, plastic hammer/building tools props etc.

It is harvest time.  The fruits are ready to be picked from the trees.  The sun is rising, and everyone is preparing to make their way to the orchards.  As they slowly gather in the village square, they talk about the harvest, which promises to be abundant.  Since a storm is predicted for tomorrow, they decide that they will have to pick all the fruit today.  Just then you enter the scene, pretending to be the village teacher.  You, too, have heard about the coming storm.  You explain to them that there is a leak in the roof of the school that has to be fixed.  “Last time it rained,” you tell them, “the children’s books got soaking wet.”  Everyone agrees that the roof should be fixed immediately, so two or three of the villagers volunteer to go and do it.  The others go off to the fields. 

It is now the end of the day.  Dark clouds are starting to roll in, but, thankfully, the roof has been fixed.  Those who repaired it are tired as they return to the village square.  The others, too, are returning from a hard day’s work, their baskets filled with fruit.  But do they want to share their fruit with they sent to fix the roof?  No.  They keep all of the fruit for themselves.  They are unfair to their friends.

Now we are going to improvise the situation again.  This time, however, those with the fruit show FAIRNESS towards their friends.  They decide that, since everyone agreed it was urgent to fix the roof, it is only fair that the day’s harvest should be shared with those who repaired it.  Everyone joyfully gathers together, and they divide the fruits among themselves.

Craft with the image of the Camel from the story

The first is a simple card to cut and fold. HERE

Cut out both camel pieces per child. Use cardstock or use the cutout image as a template to cut the cardboard.

I used foam tape that is sticky on both sides, available in dollar stores. You need the two parts of the camel to be layered with space between the pieces so that it is sturdy and can stand up. If you do not have access to foam tape, use small square bits of cardboard and glue between the pieces.

Australian Peace Pack to supplement today’s lesson. Using the quote by Bahá’u’lláh:

“Be vigilant, that ye may not do injustice to anyone, be it to the extent of a grain of mustard seed.”

…we created a beautiful little piece of art – with a nest made of tissue paper, and a tiny mustard seed stuck in the middle of it. We have to be fair at all times, and can’t let injustice happen – even though it might only be to the extent of a grain of mustard!

Light of Unity
This is a two-day activity.

Materials:

First day:

  1. White water-color paper, one page for each child
  2. Water colors
  3. Paint brushes.
  4. Pots of water so children can rinse brushes
  5. Paper towels so children can dry brushes between colors

Second day

  1. White card-stock, one for each child, for background
  2. ScissorsGlue
  3. Pre-printed verse about unity, or pen or felt-tipped markers to write the verse.

On the first day, the children fill their paper with painted abstract and colorful swirls and swishes.   Make sure there is plenty of yellow for the sun. Let his dry completely.  See example on www.supportingthecoreactivities.org .

On the second day, cut the painted paper and create a collage that resembles a sunrise over water, or maybe over land, gluing the pieces to the background card-stock.  The children can write in a verse about Unity, or create a pre-printed verse they can glue onto their art work.  See example on www.supportingthecoreactivities.org .

SEARCHING FOR TRUTH G2 L9

LESSON 9: SEARCHING FOR TRUTH

From the earliest days of our lives, we are seeking to make sense of the world around us, and our thirst for knowledge is great. Our natural desire is to look for answers and search for truth.

Many factors influence us as we progress in our development—whether it is physical, intellectual or spiritual development—but the issue of motivation is fundamental to our learning at every age.  As we have discussed in many courses, understanding is itself the greatest of all motivators. When we achieve understanding, the pursuit of learning becomes a source of continued joy. 

Searching for God

Abdu’l-Baha explains that, when we look at the world, we see the signs of God’s perfections everywhere.  As we think about His words and try to understand their meaning, we are able to see God’s tokens and signs all around us.  The sun shines and gives light, warmth, and life to the world, reminding us of the love of God, without which we would perish.  The rain falls on the earth just as the bounties of God are continuously showered upon our souls.  A mountain rises towards the heavens calling to mind His majesty and grandeur. 

When we start our search, we must purify our hearts,. We must open our hearts to the truth. We must not let “veils” get in the way of our search.  Does anyone know what type of Veils could prevent us from finding God?

Some of the things we want to keep in mind when looking at this topic are:

How do you recognize Truth? Where do you start on your journey looking for truth? When do we search for truth? Why is it important to seek and find the truth? Who has to seek out the truth and Who has the answers we seek?

We ask questions of our parents, elders, and teachers and reflect on what we discover. Searching after truth requires us to be attentive—to listen, to observe, to think deeply. We strive, and we persevere. Often we make mistakes, but our understanding increases as we think about what we did and continue to put forth effort.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá tells us that truth is one, no matter where we may find it. For example, light is good, from whatever lamp it may shine. Exertion

Alice wanted to help carry the shopping bags to their home, even though it was very heavy.  So, with great exertion, Alice lifted up the bag and carried it home.

The boys needed to meet their friends up the river, so they began to swim upstream.  Swimming upstream, against the flow of the river, requires great exertion.

So what does it say we need to do with the utmost of our ability and exertion?

A Story OF SUSAN MOODY
Today we will read the following story of Ṭáhirih to help illustrate for them the attributes of those who search after truth:


There are many stories of those who have sought the truth and acquired knowledge in order to better understand and grow closer to God. This is the story of a brave and knowledgeable woman, to whom Bahá’u’lláh gave the name Ṭáhirih, meaning “The Pure One”.
Ṭáhirih was born in Persia in the early 1800s, some two hundred years ago. From a young age, she had a thirst for knowledge; she loved to study from books and was eager to learn as much as she could. She would listen to her parents and family as they discussed spiritual and religious matters, and her father, who was a famous clergyman in
the country, would give her lessons, which she followed with great ease. At that time, it was rare for women to be educated, but Ṭáhirih’s desire for knowledge was so keen that her father eventually found a teacher for her who guided her studies of the arts and the sciences. As Ṭáhirih progressed, her father even arranged for her to listen to his own
religious classes, though she had to do so from behind a curtain, as customs would not permit her to mix with the male students. Such was the degree of her accomplishments that her father was heard to remark that, had she been a boy, she would have succeeded him.
Of course, for everything she had learned, Ṭáhirih still had many questions and was eager to learn more. One day, while visiting a relative, she noticed some books in his library which interested her. They were written by Shaykh Aḥmad and Siyyid Káẓim, two
notable scholars of religion. Ṭáhirih’s relative was hesitant to lend her the books, which he feared were not in line with her father’s views. But Ṭáhirih was persistent and eventually persuaded her relative to give her the books to take home.

She read the writings of Shaykh Aḥmad and Siyyid Káẓim with great care and attention and found in them many gems of wisdom. She tried to share their writings with her father, but he refused to listen to their words. Still, Ṭáhirih’s heart was attracted to the beauty of their ideas, and she began to correspond with Siyyid Káẓim, asking him the many questions that her studies had raised in her mind. She sensed that she was being led to a new spiritual truth and determined that she must go to the city of Karbilá to study with Siyyid Káẓim. As a woman, she would not be permitted to travel alone, so she convinced her father to allow her to travel to Karbilá with her sister, and they set out on the long journey. When they eventually arrived, Ṭáhirih discovered that Siyyid Káẓim had passed away just a few days earlier. Imagine her disappointment! She had traveled so far and had hoped to learn so much from him. Siyyid Káẓim’s family could see how disappointed she was and how sincere was her desire to learn. So they invited her to stay for a while and made available to her the writings of Siyyid Káẓim that had not been published. What joy she must have felt to be able to study his words of wisdom and gain new insights. She was even able to share her understanding of profound matters with some of Siyyid Káẓim’s students, sitting behind a curtain, just as she had done in her father’s classes. Ṭáhirih did not return home for several years. In the city of Karbilá her search for truth would, by the grace of God, eventually yield its most precious fruit. For in that city she would be blessed to recognize the truth of the Divine message which had been brought to the people of Persia by the person of the Báb. How she was guided to recognize the Báb is another story that we will hear in a later class. But you should know that, after declaring her belief in the Báb, Ṭáhirih went on to become one of the most outstanding heroines of the Bahá’í Faith and a champion of the cause for women. Her courage and strength were indomitable, and her breadth of learning vast. She dedicated the rest of her life to gaining knowledge, composing poems and articles that reflected her deep understanding of the teachings of God and leading many a searching soul to the truth they sought.

GAMES FOR GRADE 2 TO PLAY
DRAMA / GAMES

The activities that follow will help the children continue developing the skills and abilities of creative drama.

Ask your students to stand in their imaginary squares.  As you did in the previous lesson, have the children stand about 5 feet apart and imagine that they are in their own squares.  Ask them to walk along the border of his/her imaginary square.

Ask children to: raise up your arms and stretching from the tips of your toes to the tips of your fingers, reach towards the sky.  Now you are going to relax and let your arms and head hang freely.  Repeat this several times.

For this next exercise, the children will remain in their imaginary squares.  Ask them to create a shape with their bodies, using their heads, arms and legs.  This is shape number 1.  Tell them to hold that shape for a few seconds. 

Next, have them move into a second shape.  This is shape number 2.  Again have them hold the shape for a few seconds.  Now count- 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 as the children move from shape to shape.  Call freeze when children are in shape number 2.  Now ask the students to find a completely new shape.  This is shape number 3.  Have them hold it for a few seconds, and then go back to shape number 1.  Now count 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2, 1, 3- as the children move from shape to shape.  Call freeze when children are in the shape number 3. 

Finally, have children create a fourth shape and ask them to hold it for a few seconds.  Then ask them to go back to shape number 1 and count, 1, 2, 3, 4 (mix it up) having children move from shape to shape.  Try to establish as rhythm as you count.

For the next activity, you can have the children act out parts of a story, which will help to consolidate in their minds, if only in a rudimentary way, what it means to search after the truth.  Begin by asking the children to demonstrate each of the following actions, without stepping outside of their imaginary squares:

  • walking
  • running
  • climbing
  • jumping
  • stomping
  • pushing
  • looking/gazing

Next explain to the children that you will tell them a story about a group of children, much like themselves, living in the village of Karu Karu.  They will need to listen attentively while you speak.  Whenever you refer to one of the actions mentioned earlier- for example, walking- they should follow suit, pretending to be the child in the story.  (to assist them, you may wish to carry out the relevant action yourself in each specific instance)

The village of Karu Karu was next to a beautiful river.  All of the people in the village used the water from the river to cook, clean, and grow their crops/food.  On very hot days the children from the local school would WALK down to the river to swim in the cool water.  One hot summer’s day after their school lessons were over, the children RAN down to the river.  But when they arrived, to their surprise, they saw that there was just a trickle of water coming down the mountain, where once an abundance of water had flowed.  They knew that if the water was drying up downriver, there must be problems upriver.  With such little water available, the whole village would be in trouble.  How would the farmers grow their crops?  How would everyone cook their food?  If only they knew what the problem was they could try to find a solution.  They wondered whether perhaps the source of the water had dried up.  In consultation with their teacher and their parents they decided that the next day they would set out on a journey with their teacher to WALK to the top of the mountain to try and discover the problem and see what they could do.

The next morning at dawn the children set out with their teacher and WALKED until they reached the foot of the mountain.  Looking up at the mountain some commented, “The top of the mountain is very far; how can we ever make it all the way up?”  The teacher explained, “We will have to go slowly and be patient with each other and with ourselves”.  Taking each other’s hands, they hesitantly began to WALK up the mountain.  They CLIMBED and CLIMBED and the higher they went, the harder it became.  But they learned to draw on their strength.  Sometimes their feet would slip but they would help one another to keep going. They WALKED and WALKED and it seemed like the journey would never end.  When they reached a muddy path, some STOMPED through it while others RAN across as quickly and carefully as they could.  After WALKING for some time, they suddenly came upon a tree fallen on the ground.  At first each of the children individually tried different things to move the tree, but nothing happened.  Then, putting all their efforts together, and with all their strength, they PUSHED until the tree rolled out of the way.

The further up they went, the steeper the mountain became.  They had to use their hands and legs and they CLIMBED up the steep path leading to the very top.  When one of them wanted to give up, the others would remind him or her that they had to keep going to help the village.  Finally, they reached the top of the mountain and in their excitement, they RAN to the source of the river.  But the water was flowing normally an there seemed to be nothing wrong.  Realizing the problem was not at the source, the children WALKED to another part of the mountain where they could LOOK down at the river, and as they stared into the distance, they suddenly saw that there was a blockage in the river, which was causing it to flow away from the village.  At last, after their long journey, that had found the problem!  The children starting JUMPING for joy, for they finally knew what to do to help bring water back to the village.

What knowledge do we have that can be channeled into service?

We are told that when we perform service to the best of our ability, it is like a prayer.

Should Prayer take the form of action?

‘Abdu’l-Bahá.—‘Yes: In the Bahá’í Cause arts, sciences and all crafts are (counted as) worship. The man who makes a piece of notepaper to the best of his ability, conscientiously, concentrating all his forces on perfecting it, is giving praise to God. Briefly, all effort and exertion put forth by man from the fullness of his heart is worship, if it is prompted by the highest motives and the will to do service to humanity. This is worship: to serve mankind and to minister to the needs of the people. Service is prayer. A physician ministering to the sick, gently, tenderly, free from prejudice and believing in the solidarity of the human race, he is giving praise’.

Knowledge is essential for human progress. In order to build a better world, we must gain knowledge of the sciences and the arts. By applying what we learn, we are able to improve the quality of the food we grow, make advances in medicine that help us live healthier lives, discover ways to communicate with people in far-off places, and create
things that beautify the world. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá encourages learning about the sciences and arts, as well as acquiring spiritual knowledge that comes from the teachings of God. These teachings give us a deeper understanding of the world around us and inspire us to use our knowledge for the benefit of others, to remove conflict, and to promote cooperation and harmony.
Once, while speaking with a teacher from England, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá asked what subjects he taught in school. The gentleman told Him that he taught Latin, English, Algebra, and Geometry. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá then asked him if he also addressed spiritual matters in his classes. The gentleman replied that there was no time for spiritual education in school.
‘Abdu’l-Bahá made no comment, but He did not need to! From His question and His silence, the gentleman understood that both material and spiritual education are necessary for human advancement. Aware that most schools did not provide spiritual instruction, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá encouraged Bahá’í communities to establish regular classes for this
purpose. To help us remember how acquiring knowledge can help us contribute to the betterment of the world, let us memorize the following quotation:

Exert every effort to acquire the various branches of knowledge and true understanding. Strain every nerve to achieve both material and spiritual accomplishments.

Collis and his family lived in the countryside.  He was tired from tending the crops but worked hard to finish the day’s work.  He exerted every effort to finish the work before the end of the day.

The teacher spent many hours working with students to make sure they know their lessons well.  The teacher exerted every effort to help her students.

Understanding

Amelia read the lesson twice.  However, only after her sister explained the lesson to her did she gain the necessary understanding.

Arnold’s mother always spoke to him about the importance of unity, but his understanding grew as he made friends with children of many different backgrounds and experienced unity firsthand.

A Story OF SUSAN MOODY
Story- done as a play

Narrator: We are going to hear a story about Susan Moody, a very brave doctor who was called upon by Abdu’l-Baha to journey from her homeland of the United States to IRAN in order to help the women of that country.  Some years before leaving for Iran, Susan had prayed to God that she would be enabled to dedicate herself entirely to God and act in accordance with His Will.  God blessed her greatly and allowed her to do just that!

Susan: Well hello there!  My name is Susan Moody!  I lived in Chicago in the United States in the early 1900s, about 110 years ago.  At that time, it was very rare for women to be doctors, but at the age of 52, I was inspired to study medicine.  I soon completed medical school and started to work as a doctor.  Around the same time, I was introduced to the Bahai Faith and became an active member of the Bahai community, teaching children’s classes, like the one you are having today, and hosting visitors and gatherings in my home.

Narrator: Now, in Iran, there was a team of doctors who were planning to establish a hospital in the capital city, Tihran.  Perhaps you know that, because of the religious traditions there, many women considered it improper for them to show their faces to a male doctor, and female doctors in the country were very few.  So this team of doctors asked for a female doctor from the United States to join them, and Abdu’l-Baha encouraged Susan Moody to go!

Susan: Not surprisingly, my family and friends objected to the idea of my leaving my medical practice in the United States to help people in a far-off land, where I might have to deal with strange diseases and difficult problems.  But I was ready to respond to Abdu’l-Baha’s call!  Now I realized why I had so strongly felt the desire to study medicine several years earlier. 

Narrator: At almost 60 years of age, she set off at once! Of course, in those days, it took a long time to travel from one part of the world to another, and Iran was very far way from the United States.  On her way to Iran, Dr. Moody was able to stay for a few days in the Holy Land.

Susan: Oh what glorious days spent in the Holy Land with Abdul-Baha!  What a priviledge for me to be in the Master’s presence!  He told me that I would need PATIENCE once I arrived in my new home, but assured me that He would often pray for me and would always be with me!

Narrator: She then started out on the final part of her journey, sailing by boat across the Caspian Sea and arriving in a city in Northeastern Iran called Bandar-e Anzali.  From there she traveled by horse and carriage across the mountains to the capital, Tihran, stopping along the way to meet with the Bahai friends and to treat people who were ill.  Already Susan began to see how pressing was the need for a female doctor, such as herself, for many women came to her for assistance. 

When Dr. Moody finally arrived in Tihran, she immediately began caring for the sick and soon became fluent in the Persian language.  She established a medical practice in her home, in addition to working at the hospital.  She was compassionate, kind and tender-hearted, and everyone loved her very dearly.  A local newspaper praised “her good qualities and kind attributes” and went on to say:

Every day from morning till noon she is in her office, No. 10 Avenue Aladauleh, receiving her patients for consultation, examination and treatment, excepting Friday and Sunday afternoons, when she goes to the Hospital Sehat…We give the utmost thanks and gratitude that such a noble woman, to such a respected person, whose presence here is a great privilege to the country of Persia…

Susan: Not long after establishing a medical practice in Tihran, I saw a need to help others learn about health issues and began to provide instruction to women in nursing and childbirth.  Eventually, I also joined hands with others to set up a formal school called the Tarbiyat School for Girls.  The school offered education to many young women, many of whom went on to become teachers themselves, making it possible to establish other schools for girls throughout the country. 

Narrator: The Tarbiyat School for Girls became highly respected and was attended by young ladies from all backgrounds, until it was forced to close down by the government because of hatred and suspicion.  That, however, is another story, and someday you may want to learn more about this remarkable school.  But today, you should know that Dr. Susan Moody died in Iran at the age of 83, after having spent some 20 years of her life applying the knowledge she gained to better her new homeland and helping others, especially women, to have the opportunity to do the same.

Susan: What a blessing it was to live a life of service to humanity.  I am so thankful that I was allowed to serve and help others through my love for God and knowledge of medicine.  When I entered the next realm and met Baha’u’llah face to face, He was very pleased with me, which has made me eternally happy!

Next have the children sit in a circle, yourself among them.  Pick up a small item, such as a twig or a pen or pencil, and say, “I could use this, pretending it is a comb.” Then pretend to comb your hair with it.  Then pass the item to the child sitting next to you and ask the child what he or she could use it for.  Following your example, the child should reply and demonstrate how else the item could be used.  He or she might say, for example: “I could use this, pretending it is a harmonica,” or “I could use this, pretending it is a fishing pole”.  The item should then be passed to the next child in a similar manner and each child needs to come up with something new, using their creativity, until everyone in the circle has had a turn.

 (This next activity is to help reinforce the idea that knowledge is central to the advancements of civilization and the betterment of the world.) 

Today, we are going to use DRAMA and ACT OUT different characters from the story you heard about Dr. Susan Moody.  Remember how she went to Iran to help women who would otherwise not have received medical attention?  What spiritual qualities did Susan Moody have to show in order to be of service to the many women in Iran? Assign each character in the story to one child (or a small group of children), remembering that no one should ever assume the Figure of Abdu’l-Baha in a reenactment.  You will each describe Susan Moody from the point of view of a different character. 

(If necessary, more than one child can act out each character, or you may wish to come up with other characters with whom Susan Moody may have come into contact.  The characters may include:

  1. A member of Susan Moody’s family who did not want her to go to Iran but who understood why she decided to move there.
  2. A fellow male doctor working in Iran who knew how much women needed help and who was glad Susan Moody was there to care for them.
  3. A woman who became a patient of Susan Moody
  4. A young girl who attended the Tarbiyat School for Girls and later became a doctor.

Now it’s time to make another lapbook.

LESSON 7: Seeking the Knowledge of God

Through the ages, Messengers of God have appeared when we need them the most in order to guide us and give us more knowledge about God.

All the past Manifestations of God foretold the coming of the Day of God, a day when the peoples of the world would be united when wars and misery would disappear, and peace would be established on earth. Such prophecies, of course, point to the advent of Bahá’u’lláh. So potent is the measure of God’s bounty in this Day, and so excellent are the favors that are being showered upon humanity, that we have been blessed by two Manifestations of God, the Báb appearing only nine years before Bahá’u’lláh.

In seeking knowledge about God, we can read the Holy writings, ask questions, look at nature, and even explore spiritual concepts using science to help us figure stuff out. 

We strive to obey the commandments of God, with our words and deeds. We pray to Him to guide us and bring us closer to Him.  

Knowledge of God is intimately connected to love for Him

How do we get to know God?

  • We know God through those Special Beings that He sends to humanity from time to time Who brings us His laws and teachings.  These Special Beings come when humanity need help the most
  • By listening to the Words of the Manifestation of God for today
  • By studying His laws and teachings and applying them to our lives, we DRAW CLOSER TO GOD.
  • By observing nature all around us
  • By meditating, praying, and listening for the answer

Searching for God

Abdu’l-Baha explains that, when we look at the world, we see the signs of God’s perfections everywhere.  As we think about His words and try to understand their meaning, we are able to see God’s tokens and signs all around us.  The sun shines and gives light, warmth, and life to the world, reminding us of the love of God, without which we would perish.  The rain falls on the earth just as the bounties of God are continuously showered upon our souls.  A mountain rises towards the heavens calling to mind His majesty and grandeur. 

When we start our search, we must purify our hearts,. We must open our hearts to the truth. We must not let “veils” get in the way of our search.  Does anyone know what type of Veils could prevent us from finding God?

A Story About Mirza Abu’l-Fadl Becoming a Baha’i

This is the story of how Mirza Abu’l-Fadl, one of the early believers in the time of Bahau’llah, became a Bahai.  Mirza Abu’l-Fadl was very well-known for his penetrating insight, his wealth of knowledge, and his ability to understand and explain complex spiritual ideas.  In his youth, he studied in depth such subjects as mathematics, astronomy (the study of the stars), philosophy, and the Arabic language, which he mastered in addition to his native Persian language. 

When he was still a young man, Mirza Abu’l-Fadl became a professor at one of the oldest universities in Tihran, the capital of Iran.  This is the story of how he, while in that city, gained knowledge beyond any he had acquired in all his broad studies– knowledge of the Revelation of Baha’u’llah, the Manifestation of God for this day. 

One afternoon, Mirza Abu’l-Fadl and a few of his companions set out on donkeys to visit the countryside.  One their way out of the city, one of the donkeys lost a shoe, and the party called at the nearest blacksmith’s shop to help.

 Does anyone know what a blacksmith is?

 When the blacksmith, who had very little formal education, saw Mirza Abu’l-Fadl’s long beard and large turban, in that country those were considered symbols of his vast learning, he asked whether the scholarly man might be willing to answer a question that had perplexed the blacksmith for some time.

Before I tell you the rest of the story, it is important to know that when a Messenger of God comes to the world, His Teachings are pure and bring life to the souls, but over time, people change the words, and bring in ideas and traditions that are not taught by the Messengers of God themselves. 

This is what had happened at the time that Mirza Abu’l-Fadl was meeting the blacksmith. 

So, the blacksmith asked Mirza Abu’l-Fadl,

“Is it true,” began the blacksmith, referring to an old written religious tradition- one of those that had become changed by human beings-

“Is it true that each drop of rain is accompanied by an angel from heaven, and that this angel brings down the rain to the ground?

“This is true,” Mirza Abu’l-Fadl responded, for it had long been believed by the people in that region that this was so- and remember that He had not yet become a Bahai.

After a pause, the blacksmith begged to be allowed another question, to which Mirza Abu’l-Fadl gave his assent. 

“Is it true,” the blacksmith asked once more,

“that if there is a dog in a house no angel will ever visit that house?”

Again, Mirza Abu’l-Fadl responded in the affirmative, saying YES, for this too was a belief held by those who followed these written traditions. 

In that case,” commented the blacksmith, arriving at his point,

“no rain should ever fall on a house where a dog is kept.”

Mirza Abu’l-Fadl had no answer.  He left the shop embarrassed and angry, for he had been stumped by a blacksmith with no formal schooling! 

Mirza Abu’l-Fadl had learned from his companions that the blacksmith was a Bahai.  Now, it happened that he and the blacksmith shared a mutual friend, a local draper who had a shop in the bazaar that Mirza Abu’l-Fadl would sometimes visit.  When the draper, who was also a Bahai, heard about the incident at the blacksmith’s, he invited Mirza Abu’l-Fadl to take part in some discussions.  He accepted the invitation, and the meeting was arranged.  In that meeting, Mirza Abu’l-Fadl posed numerous questions and raised many objections. 

Each one was answered in such simple terms and in such a wise manner that Mirza Abu’l-Fadl found himself at a loss, for he had thought he could easily prove wrong the Bahai beliefs. 

For several months Mirza Abu’l-Fadl continued to meet many different Bahais, some of them quite scholarly themselves.  

Finally, forever unable to deny the proofs offered by the followers of Baha’u’llah, he turned his heart in earnest to God and begged to be shown the truth. 

Soon, he was overwhelmed with the truth of Baha’u’llah’s mission, and became, after nearly a year of protest, a staunch and steadfast believer and an avid teacher of the Cause.

The story of how Mirza Abu’l-Fadl came to recognize the truth of Baha’u’llah’s Revelation shows us how important it is to acquire knowledge not only through the study of God’s creation but also through His Manifestation in the day in which we live.

GAMES FOR GRADE 2 TO PLAY
DRAMA / GAMES
The activities that follow will help the children continue developing the skills and abilities of creative drama.

Ask your students to stand in their imaginary squares.  As you did in the previous lesson, have the children stand about 5 feet apart and imagine that they are in their own squares.  Ask them to walk along the border of his/her imaginary square. Ask children to: raise up your arms and stretching from the tips of your toes to the tips of your fingers, reach towards the sky.  Now you are going to relax and let your arms and head hang freely.  Repeat this several times.

Ask students to stand in a circle.  Choose one child to be the “investigator” and tell him/her to leave the area where the class is being held.  Now choose another child to be the “initiator”.  Explain to the children that this child will lead the group in a series of simple movements.  For example, he or she may do several circles with the left arm, several with the right arm, then bend down and touch the ground several times, and so on.  The rest of the children should try to follow the movements so quickly and so closely that the “investigator” is unable to discover who the “initiator” is.  Are you ready?  Ok- have the investigator come and stand in the middle of the circle.  Can he/she discover the “initator”?  Once the child has guessed correctly, repeat the exercise, choosing a new child to be the “investigator” and another to be the “initiator”.  If time allows, repeat the game several times so that every child can be the “investigator” or the “initiator” at least once.

Now we are going to move on to an activity that relates to the theme of today’s lesson- the importance of seeking knowledge, particularly knowledge of God.  In all created things, we see the signs of God. I am going to ask you to act out, in turn, different things we see in nature.  Each of you are going to have a turn to act something out, while the rest of the class guess what it is.  I will come and whisper in your ear the thing from nature that you are going to act out- one at a time and the class will then get a chance to guess as you act it out.

When we are going in search of anything, we have an idea of what we are looking for. Sometimes we find it and sometimes we don’t. Other times, we are surprised, and even please by what else we find. The process is one of learning and joy. It is the same when we clear our hearts and start our spiritual search. 

Today we will do a physical search of our immediate environment.

By following God’s commandments, we show our faithfulness to Him, that we desire only that which He desires for us.  In our daily lives and through our interactions with others, we strive our utmost to put into action His teachings.  To pray daily is one of the commandments of God, and we observe it under all conditions, even, for example, if we are tired.  We are told that we should not speak ill of others, that backbiting is not acceptable.  So if people around us are gossiping, we do not take part in such conversations.  To treat animals with kindness, to be courteous and hospitable at all times, and to engage in a worthy profession or trade are also commandments of God.  We are exhorted to think each day about what we have done and consider what more we can do so that our actions increasingly come to reflect the teachings of God.  There are, of course, many other commandments that have to do with the material and spiritual life of the individual, as well as those pertaining to the life of the community, for example, marriage, education, and burial of the dead

STORY RELATED TO LESSON
A Story of Haji Muhammad

You will remember the story of Haji Muhammad from our last lesson, how obedient he was to Baha’u’llah and what strength he drew from trust in God.  But Haji Muhammad was not always so quick to obey.  Perhaps you know that he was an excellent marksman.  His bullets never missed their targets.  He could even hit a small bird in full flight while galloping on horseback.  One day, with his rifle on his shoulder, he came upon a group of Baha’is who were on an outing with Baha’u’llah and decided to join them.

When Baha’u’llah saw that Haji Muhammad was going to use his rifle, He told him not to kill innocent birds.  Haji Muhammad did not pay any attention to what Baha’ullah said because his mind was on shooting, which he loved very much.  So, he continued shooting at every bird he saw.  But he was quite surprised to find that none of his bullets hit.  He shot once, he shot twice, he shot many times – but did not bring down even one bird.  He shot at big birds and at little birds, without any success. 

The group was returning from the outing when a large, beautiful, white bird caught Haji Muhammad’s eye.  It was so big that it could not fly quickly, and Haji Muhammad thought that surely it would be easy to hit this one.  His first shot missed.  Then he fired four more times, but he missed every time.  In a panic the frightened bird flew near them.  Haji Muhammad thought that now he could not possibly miss.  He fired two more shots, but the bird escaped.  

Haji Muhammad was astonished, and he began to think about the whole incident.  All of sudden, he understood something very important.  He realized that Baha’u’llah had given him a clear command, but in his preoccupation with his own wishes and desires, he had ignored Baha’u’llah.  That day Haji Muhammad made a firm decision to obey the commandments of God at all times.

The following activities with strengthening the children’s skills and abilities in drama:

  1. As always, start by having the children stand in their imaginary squares and do the stretching exercise.
  2. Now explain to your students that, for the next activity, they are going to communicate using only the movement of their bodies.  To begin, ask them to say:
    • “stop!” with their hands
    • “Yes” using their head
    • “I don’t understand” using their eyes
    • “I hear something” using their ears
    • “I’m surprised” using their jaw
    • “I smell fresh bread” using their nose
    • “come here!” using their finger
    • “I’m running” using arms,
    • “I bump into a wall” using the shoulder
    • “I’m slipping” using their legs
    • “I’m tired” using their whole body,
    • “I’m waiting” using whole body and
    • “I’m looking for someone” using whole body
  1. Divide the students into groups of five or six.  Have the children in each group stand in a row, front to back, with their hands on the shoulders of the child in front of them.  All the children should close their eyes except the child at the very end of each row.  This child is the “driver” and the others are the “bus”.  When you say “Go!” all the “buses” should start moving forward.  The “driver” steers the “bus” to the right or to the left by gently pushing the corresponding shoulder of the child in front of him or her, who does the same to the next child, and so on.  To stop the “bus”, the “driver” gently pulls on both shoulders.
  2. The above exercise will have contributed to the ability of the youngsters to coordinate their movements and cooperate with one another.  Now in preparation for the next exercise, explain to the children that there is a difference between doing something with diligence and doing something without proper care and effort.  Tell them that they will do an improvisation today in pairs to illustrate this point.  Divide the children into pairs and ask them to sit and listen quietly while you describe the scene they will act out.

    Tell the children to imagine that they are living in the mountains, in a small place that is far from the local market.  One day, their mother asks them to do to the market to buy some vegetables and return home straight away.  Soon after setting out, they encounter a herd of sheep blocking the road.  Rather than waiting for the sheep to move, they gently steer their way through the herd.  Next, they come to a river, where they must get into a boat and row their way across.  If they stop rowing even for a moment, they will start to go downstream.  Finally, they make it to the other side of the river and continue their journey. As they are walking, they meet some friends who ask them to join in a game of football. At first, they think about stopping to play but then they remember their promise to their mother to buy the vegetables and come home without delay.  On their return from the market, they think about taking a different path, one that is more beautiful, with flowers to pick along the way.  The other path is much shorter, but not as pretty. They decide to take the shorter path, and soon reach home with the vegetables requested by their mother.

Out of His infinite love, God has given us laws and teachings to live by. These laws and teachings are like lamps that illuminate our path. Through their light, we are able to see how it is that God wants us to live.  As we obey His commandments, we draw closer to Him; otherwise, we would find ourselves in darkness and we lose our way.  So it is that out of our love for God and our desire to attain His good pleasure, we obey the laws and teachings He has so graciously given to us.  Love for God moves us to act in ways that are pleasing to Him.

STORY RELATED TO LESSON
A Story of Haji Muhammad

Haji Muhammad lived during the time of Baha’u’llah, Who, as you know, revealed God’s teachings for today.  Haji Muhammad was honest in all his dealings as a businessman and was known for his trustworthiness.  For a period of time, his work brought him to ‘Akka.  One day, he was sitting in his office when ‘Abdu’l-Baha entered, bringing an urgent message from Baha’u’llah.  Haji Muhammad was to leave immediately for the city of Jeddah in Arabia.  He asked ‘Abdu’l-Baha whether he could have the bounty of attaining the presence of Baha’u’llah before departing.  ‘Abdu’l-Baha explained that there was no time as the ship was due to leave at any moment.  Haji Muhammad closed the office at once and headed straight for the port to board the ship.  His desire to obey was so exemplary that he had no other thought but to follow the command of Baha’u’llah.

As soon as Haji Muhammad boarded, the ship set sail.  Only then did he realize that, because of the great rush, he had not thought to ask ‘Abdu’l-Baha the purpose of his trip to Arabia.  Now it was too late! Still, he was not concerned.  He was certain that, once he arrived in Jeddah, God would guide his steps.

The sea that day was unusually stormy, and the journey fraught with peril. Everyone was worried that the ship was going to sink – everyone, that is, except for Haji Muhammad.  He knew that he would be protected and the ship would arrive safely in Jeddah, for he had been entrusted by Baha’u’llah with a mission to carry out in that city.  And the ship did indeed arrive at its destination.  

After leaving the ship, Haji Muhammad heard two people talking in Persian among the crowds.  Being Persian himself, he approached them and discovered that they, too, were Baha’is and were on their way to Akka to visit Baha’u’llah. They had been unjustly imprisoned their faith for ten years and had just been released.  This was their first journey to the Holy Land, and they were in need of assistance.  It became clear to Haji Muhammad that the purpose of his mission in Jeddah was to help these two souls to find their way to ‘Akka and attain the presence of Baha’u’llah, a responsibility which he carried out with great care and attention.

GAMES FOR GRADE 2 TO PLAY
DRAMA / GAMES
The activities that follow will help the children continue developing the skills and abilities of creative drama.
  1. Ask your students to stand in their imaginary squares. You may have them do the stretching exercise described in Lesson 2.
  2. Now tell the children to stretch their arms out at shoulder length and rotate them slowly, making small circles.  Gradually the circles should become bigger and bigger.  As they do this exercise, their arms will feel heavier and heavier. Tell the children than when their arms feel very heavy, they should let them drop and shake them out.
  3. For this next exercise, the children are to work outside of their imaginary squares.  Explain to them that you are going to call out a shape.  Without speaking to one another they should position themselves, so that together they form that shape.  To do this, they will need to watch one another carefully and pay close attention to one another’s movements.  It is suggested that you call out the following shapes: circle, triangle, square, straight line, crooked line.


The above exercise will have helped your students learn to pay attention to one another and coordinate their movements.  It builds on the exercise in the preceding lesson in which they were moving around together in a large space.  The next exercise will further their understanding of the theme of today’s lesson, that we obey God out of our love for Him.  

Begin by asking the children to imagine they are passengers boarding the ship that Haji Muhammad sailed on to Jeddah.  Once they are all aboard, the ship sets sail under the bright sun on clear and still waters.  As the shore gradually fades from sight, everyone settles in for the long journey across the sea.  At first, the sea is calm, but after a short time, waves begin to lap against the side of the boat.  The ship starts to rock in the wavy sea.  Ask the children to look toward the horizon; they see dark clouds fast approaching and hear the distant roll of thunder.  The passengers begin to feel afraid.  As the waves become bigger and the darkness approaches, they huddle closer together.  have the children imagine that big drops of rain being to fall from the sky. Suddenly, thunder cracks overhead, and waves crash against the side of the ship.  The rain pours down as it is tossed from side to side.  Many of the passengers fear that the ship will sink into the sea.  Just when they think all is lost, the storm seems to pass.  the rain, the wind and the waves slowly being to die down.  Off in the distance, the passengers see the shores of a distant land.  The sun gradually appears from behind the clouds, and the sea turns calm once again.

Now ask the children to re-enact the drama, only this time pretending to be like Haji Muhammad on his journey. How would they be different fro the other passengers on the ship?  Ask them to show that Haji Muhamamd felt assured and protected by God through all the journey because he knew that he was acting in obedience to Baha’u’llah, God’s Manifestation on earth.

Alternative: charades, acting out the different laws/commandments God has sent us.
