Welcome to Lesson 7 Grade 4

In this class, we will begin to understand Baha’u’llah’s Station by looking at  His power to transform souls.  

We already know that the Manifestations of God manifest all of God’s names and attributes to humankind.  One of the attributes is His infinite love for every human being.  Baha’u’llah has told us that God created us out of His love for us.  If we were to be deprived of God’s love, even for a moment, we would perish and be no more.  God’s love permeates the entire creation.  It is because of His all-embracing love that the sun shines, that the plants grow, that animals give birth to their offspring, and that human beings receive blessings with every breath of their lives.  Our love for each other, the kindness we give and receive, the tenderness we feel in our heart for so many people, is all but a reflection of God’s love for His creatures.  This love is manifested today by Baha’u’llah.  And His love has the power to transform us. 

The word “transform” means to change from one condition to another.  For example, a caterpillar wraps itself in a cocoon and later emerges as a beautiful butterfly.  The caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly.  After a period of drought, the rains come and transform the barren ground into lush meadows and prairies.  Likewise, from Baha’u’llah shine the rays of the Divine love that bring life to the universe.  His teachings have the power to transform our souls.  Through prayer, the study of His Writings, and constant effort, we can fill our hearts with His love.  His Words have the power to enlighten our minds and hearts and create in us the capacity to perform great deeds in service to humankind.

When you think of Baha’u’llah, then, remember always His immense love for you.  Regard Him as a most loving Father, Whose teachings and counsels will guide you and make firm your steps.  Become dependent on His love.  Let His love give you courage so you will not be afraid of change.  Let His Words change you and make you grow.

Historical Episodes

The period of Bahá’u’lláh’s ten-year stay in Baghdád culminated in the Declaration of His Mission in the Garden of Riḍván, which was followed by His departure for Constantinople. The historical episode in this lesson describes some of the circumstances surrounding that momentous Declaration.

You know that during His stay in Baghdád, Bahá’u’lláh revived the fortunes of the Bábí community through His love and wisdom and through the power of His words. The hearts of those near to Him were afire with the love of God, and His companions felt as if they had entered paradise. Though He had not yet made His station known, He revealed volumes and volumes of Divine verses during this period.

One of the volumes Bahá’u’lláh revealed while in Baghdád is called the Book of Certitude, or Kitáb-i-Íqán, in which He explains the nature of God’s Revelation. In that book, He establishes in clear terms the unity of the world’s great religions. The book was revealed in answer to some questions posed to Bahá’u’lláh by Ḥájí Mírzá Siyyid Muḥammad, one of the Báb’s uncles.

When he attained the presence of Bahá’u’lláh in Baghdád in 1862, Ḥájí Mírzá Siyyid Muḥammad had not yet accepted the Báb as a Manifestation of God, as the Promised Qá’im for Whose advent the people of Persia had long-awaited. Bahá’u’lláh asked him to write down all the questions that perplexed him and which left him in doubt about the Báb’s station. This he promptly did, and in the span of two days and two nights Bahá’u’lláh revealed His lengthy reply. After reading the Book, Ḥájí Mírzá Siyyid Muḥammad recognized the Báb and became a firm and steadfast believer.

It was also during His stay in Baghdád, while wrapped in meditation, as He walked along the banks of the Tigris, a river which runs through the city, that Bahá’u’lláh revealed the Hidden Words, so cherished by Bahá’ís everywhere today as a guide for their spiritual growth. You already know by heart some of the gems of Divine wisdom contained in this small volume.

Here is the first passage:

“O Son of Spirit! My first counsel is this: Possess a pure, kindly and radiant heart, that thine may be a sovereignty ancient, imperishable and everlasting.”

Can you imagine the joy that filled the hearts of the friends as they listened to these and other verses for the first time?

But the joy of those days was not to last. The enemies of the Cause did not give up their constant scheming. You should know that they had already gone so far as to hire an assassin to kill Bahá’u’lláh. His name was Ridá. Learning where Bahá’u’lláh was going one day, Ridá appeared with a pistol hidden under his cloak, ready to carry out his deadly task. To his surprise, he found that he lacked the courage to proceed when he saw Bahá’u’lláh. So he decided to wait for Him in the street and try once again. But, the minute his eyes fell upon Bahá’u’lláh, he was so overcome with fear that the pistol dropped from his hand. Bahá’u’lláh was with His brother Áqáy-i-Kalím at the time. “Return his gun to him, and show him the way to his home,” said Bahá’u’lláh to Áqáy-i-Kalím. “It seems that he has lost his way.”

Time and again the efforts of His enemies had been thus frustrated. But, some ten years after Bahá’u’lláh’s arrival in Baghdád, they succeeded in arranging another exile. Bahá’u’lláh, of course, knew all this and had already begun to speak of the tests and difficulties that lay ahead. A dream He once related to the friends caused them great distress.

“I saw,” He stated in a Tablet, “the Prophets and the Messengers gather and seat themselves around Me, moaning, weeping and loudly lamenting.”

When Bahá’u’lláh inquired from them as to the cause for such weeping, they responded that they were crying for Him. But, in the dream, the Concourse on high then addressed Bahá’u’lláh saying:

“Erelong shalt Thou behold with Thine own eyes what no Prophet hath beheld. Be patient, be patient.”

The spring of 1863 had just opened when, one day, a messenger brought a communication for Bahá’u’lláh. It was a request that an interview take place between Him and the governor of Baghdád. The governor was supposed to deliver a message from the Prime Minister of the Ottoman Empire to Bahá’u’lláh. But for three months he had, out of his profound respect for Him, put off doing so. The next day Bahá’u’lláh went to meet the governor near his home. Upon arriving at the meeting place, He was presented with a letter from the Prime Minister. It was worded in a courteous manner, inviting Him to travel to the Ottoman capital, Constantinople. You see, the Prime Minister had been convinced by Bahá’u’lláh’s enemies that, because of His growing popularity and influence, He should not remain in Baghdád. A mounted escort was ordered to accompany Him to  Constantinople for His protection. Bahá’u’lláh agreed to the request at once but refused to accept the money that the government was offering for His travels. The governor’s representative insisted, saying that the authorities would be offended if He did not accept the money. So Bahá’u’lláh took the sum and immediately distributed it among the poor of the city.

News of Bahá’u’lláh’s exile from Baghdád shook the Bábí community. The friends were overwhelmed with sadness. Gradually, however, they were consoled by Bahá’u’lláh’s kind and comforting words. As a sign of His love, He wrote in His own handwriting a Tablet for each of the friends who lived in the city—every man, woman, and child. Nabíl, the great Bahá’í historian, tells us that in the immediate days before His departure, many of them would gather together in one room, lit only by candles, and would chant aloud the verses and Tablets newly revealed by Bahá’u’lláh. Pondering on His words, they would become completely forgetful of the world, not noticing how time had passed and that night had turned into day.

Close to Baghdád there was a beautiful garden known today as the Garden of Riḍván. At the time it was full of roses. The garden belonged to a prominent man who offered it to Bahá’u’lláh so that He could greet all those wishing to bid Him farewell. On the afternoon of 22 April 1863, Bahá’u’lláh left His house, where crowds had gathered to catch a final glimpse of One Whom they had grown to love and admire. There were people of all ages, from different backgrounds, some notables and officials, others poor and orphaned. All were heartbroken and tearful. Gradually He made His way to the river Tigris, where a boat was waiting to take Him to the other side. It was there that the Garden of Riḍván was located, and He entered the garden in the late afternoon. This was the first stage of the journey that would carry Him to Constantinople. The Bábí community was grief-stricken. What would be the future of this young religion now that Bahá’u’lláh was being exiled once again? The heartbroken Bábís who gathered to bid Bahá’u’lláh farewell did not know what happiness God actually had in store for them.

Bahá’u’lláh stayed in the garden for twelve days. His enemies had tried to strike a fatal blow at the Cause by separating Him from the majority of the believers. God, however, turned the farewell into an occasion of immense gladness. During those memorable days, Bahá’u’lláh proclaimed to the believers present that He was the One promised by the Báb, that He was the Promised of All Ages. The banner of the oneness of humankind was now being raised for everyone to see.

The Declaration of His Mission created new life in the souls of His companions. This was the Day of Days for which the Báb had prepared them. Bahá’u’lláh Himself has said that on that Day “all created things were immersed in the sea of purification”.

Unfortunately, there is little known of the details of the conversations Bahá’u’lláh held with the many visitors He received in the Garden of Riḍván. The historian Nabíl was present on that occasion, and through his brief account, we are able to get but a glimpse of the glory of those days. Nabíl tells us that, at the hour of dawn every day, the gardeners would pick fresh roses and pile them in the center of the floor of Bahá’u’lláh’s tent. The pile was always so high that, when His companions gathered in the tent to drink morning tea, they were unable to see each other across it. Bahá’u’lláh would then give the roses to those present and request that they be delivered, on His behalf, to His friends in the city. All day long, from morning to evening, He would meet with the stream of visitors who kept flowing in from Baghdád. In the evening, a few of the believers took turns watching over His blessed tent. Nabíl stood watch for three nights in a row. “Every time I passed by the couch whereon He lay,” Nabíl says, “I would find Him wakeful.”

On 3 May 1863 Bahá’u’lláh mounted His horse and set out for Constantinople. Today Bahá’ís around the world celebrate this twelve-day period as the Festival of Riḍván, the anniversary of the Declaration of Bahá’u’lláh of His world-embracing Mission. It is the holiest and most significant of all Bahá’í festivals.

So many spiritual insights can be gleaned from the above historical episode into the greatness of Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation and the significance of this Day. One, for example, is the interplay between crisis and victory in the Cause of God—that every crisis leads to an even greater victory.

Blind Drawing

Use your eloquence and your powers of listening and observation!

Blind Drawing is a team-building activity that can be done in pairs. All you need is pen, paper and something to press on such as a clipboard or book (or you can use a whiteboard marker, a mini whiteboard and an eraser).

The two participants sit back to back. Only one person should have the drawing materials. The other is handed a picture (or draws a picture themselves), and must make sure that the other cannot see it. They describe the picture as carefully as possible while the other person attempts to draw it from the description.

Then they swap roles. You can set a time limit (e.g. 3 – 5 minutes) for each turn to keep things moving and get all the pairs to finish at a similar time.

Everyone can be given a few minutes at the beginning of this activity to make their secret drawing to describe to their partner. These can then be folded in half until it is their turn to describe it.

It can be helpful for the teacher to have a picture prepared beforehand to first describe to the whole class. Each child can be given an A5 piece of paper to try to replicate the picture from the description. It pays for this picture to be relatively simple and somewhat quirky, e.g. an alien with three eyes. Alternatively, it could be an element/scene from the story.

Welcome to Lesson 6 Grade 4

This lesson seeks to help the children understand that Bahá’u’lláh has come to educate souls and bring new life to humanity.

In the quotation you memorized in the last lesson,(Lesson 5. ) Bahá’u’lláh makes clear that as His hardships and tribulations grew, so did His love for God, and that nothing could stop Him from carrying out the Mission with which God had entrusted Him. He bore all the sufferings heaped upon Him with radiance and forbearance. For four months He was imprisoned in the most terrible conditions in the Síyáh-Chál.

  • Do you remember what happened to Bahá’u’lláh and His family after He was released from His imprisonment?
  • What did the government and religious leaders hope would happen by exiling Bahá’u’lláh from His native Persia?

We know they feared that, if He remained in Persia, the teachings of the Báb would continue to spread and they would lose their power and control over people. And so they forced Bahá’u’lláh to leave His homeland, thinking that His influence would fade away and His light would be extinguished. Of course, they could never succeed.

You remember that, when Bahá’u’lláh first arrived in Baghdád after He left Persia, He was so saddened by the disunity among the followers of the Báb that He went to the remote mountainous region near the town of Sulaymáníyyih. In this lesson you are going to learn what happened when Bahá’u’lláh finally returned to Baghdád. After two years, He found the Bábí community in a terrible state. But quickly everything changed as Bahá’u’lláh began to educate the believers. Soon the people of Baghdád found in their midst a community that was distinguished by the love of God and by its noble character.

The quotation you will start to memorize today speaks of the quickening power of Bahá’u’lláh’s words and the joy experienced by all those who had the bounty of attaining His presence and listening to His utterances.

Historical Episodes

The episode in this lesson centers on Bahá’u’lláh’s stay in Baghdád following His return from Sulaymáníyyih. The story of His Declaration in the Garden of Riḍván, just prior to His departure for Constantinople, will be reserved for the next lesson. 

Story 1

During the two years of Bahá’u’lláh’s absence from Baghdád, the fortunes of the Bábís had gone from bad to worse. Mírzá Yaḥyá had shown his total incompetence and had done nothing to stop this rapid decline. Bahá’u’lláh set out to educate the Bábís and to renew in them the spirit of faith they had once possessed. Over the years, through His love and wisdom, and the power of His words, He changed the behavior of the followers of the Báb. Under His guidance, the Bábís became, once again, righteous people who were the well-wishers of humankind. They put aside conflict and became promoters of unity and peace. Many Bábís from different parts of Persia began to make the long journey to Baghdád so that they could enter His presence. One of these was the young man we know today as Nabíl, the great historian of the Bahá’í Faith, whose book “The Dawn-breakers” you will someday read yourselves. He has left for us an account of what it was like for the believers to be close to Bahá’u’lláh in those special days.

We know that the house in which Bahá’u’lláh lived with His family became a place of much activity, and people came to see Him there in great numbers. One room of the house was set aside for the reception of guests and visitors. It was a simple room with a low roof, but, Nabíl tells us, it seemed to “reach to the stars”, so uplifted were the hearts of those who attained the presence of Bahá’u’lláh. For them, to be surrounded by His love and immersed in the sea of His words, was like being in paradise. All the Bábís took great care, Nabíl writes, to make sure that their conduct conformed to the high standard to which He was calling them. Each one entered into a pact with one of his fellow believers, so that, if necessary, they could remind one another of the lofty standard they had pledged to follow. Often they would gather late into the night, reciting prayers and poetry and singing songs in praise of the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh. Many nights, ten or more of them would eat no more than a few dates. They all lived modestly but were content. “I, myself with two others,” Nabíl writes, “lived in a room which was devoid of furniture.” Yet they thought little of such things. No one knew to whom the shoes, the cloaks and the robes they wore belonged. Whoever went to the bazaar to buy a few things would put on what he found without noticing whether it was his own or not. So filled were their hearts with the love of God that they even forgot their own names. “O, for the joy of those days,” are Nabíl’s words, “and the gladness and wonder of those hours!”

Story 2

As the Bábí community was spiritually revived, love and admiration for Bahá’u’lláh also grew among the inhabitants of Baghdád, including some of its dignitaries and officials. Even the governor of Baghdád eventually came to visit Him as a sign of courtesy and respect. No one who entered His presence could fail to recognize His greatness and glory. Nabíl records a story of how one night about a hundred people surrounded Bahá’u’lláh’s house, at the instigation of His enemies, ready to stir up mischief. They had swords by their sides. But Bahá’u’lláh approached the situation with His usual calm and dignity. He invited them into the house and requested His attendants to open the door for them. “They are our guests”, He said. He had refreshments served to them and discussed with them profound spiritual matters. By the time they arose to leave, their hearts had been transformed by the majesty and the kindliness of Bahá’u’lláh.

How fortunate are human beings when they can immerse themselves in the ocean of God’s mercy and partake of the knowledge and wisdom of His Manifestation! Yet, although those close to Bahá’u’lláh enjoyed the bounties of His presence and the people of Baghdád were attracted to His nobility and wisdom, some of the leaders refused to acknowledge His greatness because of their own ambition and pride. They saw Bahá’u’lláh’s growing influence as a threat to their own power. And so it will not surprise you to learn that, during this time, opposition to the Cause also grew steadily.

In one instance, a group of religious leaders decided to send a learned man to Bahá’u’lláh and to submit to Him a number of questions in order to test Him. When Bahá’u’lláh replied to all the questions satisfactorily, the learned man accepted the vastness of His knowledge. Even so, he presented the group’s request that Bahá’u’lláh perform a miracle to convince them of His extraordinary powers.

“Although you have no right to ask this,” Bahá’u’lláh replied, “for God should test His creatures, and they should not test God, still I allow and accept this request.” He told the man that first the group should choose one miracle and in writing declare that, after it had been performed, they would no longer have any doubts about Him and would all recognize Him and accept the truth of the Cause. They should seal the document and bring it to Him. The man was profoundly struck by this clear and challenging reply. He instantly arose, kissed the knee of Bahá’u’lláh, and departed. He delivered Bahá’u’lláh’s message to the group. For a few days these power-hungry men discussed how they should respond, but they could not come to any decision. Finally they had no other choice but to drop the matter. So it was that, out of His infinite love for humanity, Bahá’u’lláh invited friend and foe alike to drink deep from the cup of His wisdom and guidance. Alas! Though in dire need of the truth, some refused to partake of the life-giving waters of His Message. Driven by ambition and fear, they turned away from the Source of all knowledge and lost their way. Yet, in the end, nothing they did could prevent a growing number of people from drawing close to Him and being revived by His teachings.

Reflect

Now that we have read these 2 accounts, do you recognize that God’s promise to Bahá’u’lláh in the Síyáh-Chál—that He would be made victorious by His Person and by His Pen—was being fulfilled? Though outwardly an exile, with no earthly power or riches, He conquered hearts and became loved and respected by people of all backgrounds. Welcome to Lesson 5 Grade 4.

The purpose of this lesson is to help us realize that Baha’u’llah suffered for us and to give us a glimpse of the ordeals and hardship that He endured for the sake of humanity.  

All the Manifestations of God have suffered in the hands of leaders concerned only with their own wealth and power.  These self-seeking leaders used their influence over the ignorant people who blindly followed them to convince them to arise against God’s Manifestations. 

In the last class, we learned what happened after the pitiful attempt made by a small group of foolish Bábís on the life of the king. Even Bahá’u’lláh, Who was so loved and respected by everyone, did not escape the horrible persecution that followed. He was imprisoned in a dungeon called the Síyáh- Chál, and all His worldly possessions were taken away from Him and His family. But we also saw that in this terrible dark place, God chose to reveal to Bahá’u’lláh His Mission and that from the darkness of the Black Pit rose the Sun of Truth. You also memorized a quotation in which Bahá’u’lláh Himself tells us how He heard words all around Him assuring Him that He would be victorious.

Today we are going to learn about Bahá’u’lláh’s release from the Síyáh-Chál and what happened next. As you listen to the stories in this lesson, you should remember that Bahá’u’lláh had not yet openly declared His Mission, but the power of His Revelation was already being felt, and the government of Persia and the religious leaders had become fearful of Him. They decided to send Him into exile. They thought that they could silence Him in this way and keep others back from the radiance of His glory. So, Bahá’u’lláh and His family were forced to head for Baghdád in the middle of an, especially cold winter. Unfortunately, upon His arrival there, He found so much disunity among the followers of the Báb that soon He decided to leave Baghdád and withdraw to a remote region to commune with God.

You will see that, even in the remote mountainous region to which Bahá’u’lláh withdrew, the people came to recognize His greatness and majesty. Nothing could conceal the wisdom and power that emanated from Him. Today, you will begin to memorize a passage in which Bahá’u’lláh explains that as His hardships grew, and as more and more difficulties were heaped upon Him, His love for God increased. No earthly power could prevent Him from achieving His purpose.

Baha’u’llah lived a life of suffering and affliction.  He was imprisoned and exiled.  Lies were told about Him, His teachings ignored and rejected, and His loyal followers mercilessly persecuted.  He accepted these afflictions because He was chosen by God and did only that which God commanded.  He loved humanity and knew that the knowledge He brought from God would finally conquer ignorance.  He showed loving-kindness to every human being, even to the worst of His enemies.  He accepted His sufferings patiently.  Not for an instant did He stop shedding God’s light upon the whole world.  For forty years, under the most difficult conditions, He gave guidance to humanity.

Remembering the ordeals and hardships suffered by Baha’u’llah makes us firm in His love.  Our hearts will not waver in moments of difficulty.  We will learn to be as immovable as the mountain when ignorant people oppose the Faith.  We have to act the same way during our own tests.  Love is stronger than hate.

This is the first of four historical episodes (lessons 5 to 8) leading to Bahá’u’lláh’s final exile to the prison city of ‘Akká. As we read these accounts we must keep in mind that Bahá’u’lláh willingly endured great suffering out of His limitless love for humanity and that the Cause of God can not be stopped by anyone.

You remember from our last class that Bahá’u’lláh was imprisoned in the Síyáh-Chál for four months and that, in the icy cold depths of so horrible a place, as He lay chained to His companions, God made known to Him the greatness of His station. Yet Bahá’u’lláh told no one of what had occurred. He would wait until the exact moment appointed by God to proclaim His Mission.

During that period, the enemies of the Faith persecuted the Bábís mercilessly, committing acts of cruelty that are too horrible to describe. However, one story must be told, the story of the martyrdom of the valiant Ṭáhirih, the courageous champion of the equality of women and men. At the time she was being held captive in the home of a notable in Ṭihrán. One night, knowing that the order to end her life had been issued, she put on the most beautiful dress and anointed herself with perfume. She then sent for the wife of the notable and conveyed her last wishes to her. Afterward, she closed herself in her room and awaited, in prayer and meditation, the hour of her death.

Ṭáhirih was pacing the floor of her room, chanting words of both grief and triumph, when the guards arrived. They brought her to a garden that was outside the gates of the city. This was to be the site of her martyrdom. The headsmen were awaiting her, but when the time came for them to act, they wavered. They refused to end the life of one such as her. Instead, they managed to find a man so drunk that he did not know what he was doing. He was given a silk scarf that Ṭáhirih herself had brought, and with this scarf, he strangled that outstanding heroine of the Faith. Her lifeless body was then lowered into a well, which was filled with earth and stones, as she had desired.

Meanwhile, the enemies of the Faith were busy trying to obtain Bahá’u’lláh’s death sentence from the king, Náṣiri’d-Dín Shah. But it did not prove to be so easy for them to do so. Bahá’u’lláh came from a noble family and was loved by so many, high and low alike. Eventually, to achieve their purpose, they arranged for poison to be put into some of the food brought to Him. Of course, their plot failed. The poison was so strong that its effects were quickly noticed, and Bahá’u’lláh stopped eating the meal. In the end, the authorities had no other choice but to release Him from prison. The king, however, ordered that Bahá’u’lláh leave Persia and go into exile. He was given one month to depart.

Bahá’u’lláh was ill and exhausted from the terrible conditions of the Síyáh-Chál. The chain that had been placed around His neck during His imprisonment was so heavy that it had made deep wounds, and the poison had left Him in a weakened state. Still, in the middle of winter, on 12 January 1853, He and His family set out from their native land, never to return. You remember that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was about eight or nine, and His sister, Bahíyyih Khánum, was two years younger. They both gladly shared in their Father’s exile. Their youngest brother, however, was too small a child to undertake such a rigorous journey. He had to be left behind with some relatives until he was old enough to travel. Also with them on the journey was Áqáy-i-Kalím and another one of Bahá’u’lláh’s brothers. Together they headed for Baghdád, a city in the Ottoman Empire, escorted by two officials.

To reach the city, they had to cross the huge, snow-covered mountains that separated the Ottoman Empire from Persia. It was a perilous journey, and the supplies they had for the trip were far from adequate. You can imagine how cold it was for the small band of travelers, who did not have sufficient clothing to protect them from the snow. With the help of only some mules, they slowly made their way along the high peaks of the mountains. Often they had no option but to camp for the night in the total wilderness. But God protected them, and through His unfailing assistance, they arrived safely in Baghdád three months later.

What Bahá’u’lláh saw in Baghdád saddened His heart. After the Báb and so many of the Bábís were martyred, His remaining followers had become confused and lost. They did not know where to turn or which direction to take. And unfortunately, some of them began to forget the high standards to which the Báb had called them. They quarreled and became very disunited people. The greatest cause of the difficulty was Bahá’u’lláh’s own half-brother Mírzá Yaḥyá, an ambitious and cowardly man. He had followed Bahá’u’lláh to Baghdád and soon became jealous of the influence Bahá’u’lláh had on everyone who came into contact with Him. Working with a partner more shameless than himself, Mírzá Yaḥyá tried to turn the believers against Bahá’u’lláh. The situation grew worse daily.

A year after their arrival in Baghdád, Bahá’u’lláh’s family woke one morning to find that He was gone. He had left the city without telling anyone where He was going or why. Seeing that Mírzá Yaḥyá was creating so much disunity, Bahá’u’lláh had chosen to retire to a region of Kurdistán, some distance to the north of Baghdád. His purpose in doing so, He Himself would later state, was to avoid becoming “the subject of discord” among the Báb’s followers or “the cause of sorrow to any heart”.

In that mountainous region, not far from a town called Sulaymáníyyih, Bahá’u’lláh lived alone. He was content with little food. At times He received some milk from the shepherds in the surrounding area and, occasionally, visited the town to obtain the minimum necessities of life. The conditions were extremely harsh, but He was happy to be in communion with God.

As you can well imagine, Bahá’u’lláh’s greatness could not be kept hidden from people’s eyes for long. One day, for example, He saw a young student sitting by the road crying. He asked the reason for this sadness and was told that the other boys at the school had each received from the teacher a sample of penmanship to practice their handwriting but that he did not have a copy. Bahá’u’lláh offered with tenderness and kindness to write a sample for him. When the young boy showed the sample to his teacher at school, everyone was astonished at the beauty and excellence of Bahá’u’lláh’s penmanship. They realized that someone special now lived among them. And the news of this spread throughout Sulaymáníyyih.

Gradually, more and more of the inhabitants of Sulaymáníyyih came to know of Bahá’u’lláh and to respect Him. Some of the wise leaders of the town sought His presence and requested that He explain to them difficult spiritual matters. Bahá’u’lláh’s words had on these people their usual effect. Many a heart was transformed by His love and many a mind was illumined by His knowledge. His fame began to spread to the neighboring areas. News of a man of extraordinary wisdom and eloquence living in Kurdistán finally reached Baghdád.

So it was that one day ‘ Abdu’l-Bahá, now twelve years old, and His dear uncle, Áqáy-i- Kalím, overheard two people speaking of this most extraordinary Man. They described Him as “The Nameless One,” Who had magnetized the countryside with His love. ‘Abdu’l- Bahá and His uncle realized immediately that this Personage could be none other than Bahá’u’lláh. Without delay, they sent a trusted believer to beg Him to return, and Bahá’u’lláh accepted their request. Two years had passed since He had left Baghdád to commune with God. And, as we will see in the next class, just as He had galvanized the inhabitants of Sulaymáníyyih, He would transform and uplift the followers of the Báb in Baghdád and beyond through the power of His love and wisdom. His full glory would be made manifest, and all of the desperate attempts of His enemies to prevent the progress of the Cause of God would prove utterly futile.

Welcome to Lesson 4 Grade 4.

This lesson tells of Baha’u’llah’s imprisonment in the Síyáh-Chál, described in the historical episode, and represents one of the most intense periods of His suffering. When we learn of Baha’u’llah’s sorrows and adversities we will see that no matter how much the enemies of Baha’u’llah tried to eradicate Him, Baha’u’llah always emerged triumphant.

In the last lesson, we discussed the importance of the Conference of Badasht:

On that occasion, the followers of the Báb decided it was time to set aside outdated beliefs and follow His teachings. But those who ruled the country, especially the religious leaders, were afraid of losing their power over the people. If the masses accepted God’s new teachings, how would they control their thoughts?

Something had to be done! And thus began the systematic persecution of the followers of the Báb.

He willingly gave up His life so that He could purify hearts and make them ready to receive Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation.”

Do you remember the events surrounding the martyrdom of the Báb?

Now, in this lesson, we will learn what occurred in the years immediately after The Báb’s martyrdom. The persecution and massacre of His followers eventually became so fierce that no Bábí was safe. Even Bahá’u’lláh, Who was loved and respected by everyone, was caught up in the storm of violence. What you will hear will bring sadness to your hearts.

Do you know what a ‘dungeon’ is?

Bahá’u’lláh was taken to a dark and gloomy dungeon called the Síyáh-Chál, which means the ‘black pit’, where He was put under chains. But we have seen that, despite suffering and opposition, the Manifestations of God succeed in bringing light into the world. You will be filled with joy, then, when you hear how, while imprisoned in the Black Pit, Bahá’u’lláh received the first stirrings of God’s Revelation in His soul. What is more, today you will start to memorize a passage in which Bahá’u’lláh tells us Himself what occurred at that historic moment— how He heard words all around Him assuring Him that He would be made victorious and that God would raise up people who would aid Him in victory.

Of course, in the many stories we heard earlier about people around the world who celebrated the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, we saw the fulfillment of these words. Communities across the globe, including our own, are teeming with men and women who are trying to live according to His teachings, and we are glad to be counted among them. As the number of those illumined by His teachings increases, this world will gradually change: suffering will give way to prosperity; ignorance will retreat before knowledge; oppression will surrender to justice. All the darkness of despair and hopelessness we see around us today will be chased away by the light of His teachings, just as out of the darkness and gloom of the Black Pit, the Síyáh-Chál rose the Sun of Truth.

The historical episode in this lesson revolves around Bahá’u’lláh’s imprisonment in the Síyáh-Chál. This episode in Bahá’u’lláh’s life is divide into 3 stories:

  1. The pitiful attempt on the life of the king and Bahá’u’lláh’s arrival at the Síyáh-Chál,
  2. The conditions of that dreadful place and the consequences of His arrest for His dear family,
  3. The stirring anthem of the Bábís and the birth of Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation.

Story 1

The summer of 1852 brought intense suffering to the followers of the Báb. The Báb Himself had been martyred two years before, and many of His most outstanding disciples had already given their lives for their Faith. A small group of Bábís were so saddened by the martyrdom of their beloved Báb that they decided to take revenge. Although Bahá’u’lláh told them to let go of their foolish ideas, they would not listen to Him and plotted against the life of the new king who now sat on the throne, Náṣiri’d-Dín Shah. Their pitiful attempt failed, but it aroused such anger in the king that he ordered yet another massacre of the followers of the Báb. The cruel acts that were committed during those months against the Bábís are so shocking that to describe them would bring too much sadness to your hearts. You will read about them later in your lives and will wonder how any government could have promoted such savagery among its people. For now what you need to know is that this wave of persecutions brought great suffering to Bahá’u’lláh Who, as you saw in our earlier classes, had enjoyed relative freedom until then because of His position in society. An order was issued for His immediate arrest. On the day the king gave the order, Bahá’u’lláh was staying in a village some kilometers away from the city of Ṭihrán. The news that He was soon to be imprisoned did not disturb Him in the slightest, and He faced His arrest with His usual dignity. The prison chosen for Him was called the Síyáh-Chál—“the Black Pit”. The Síyáh-Chál was originally a reservoir of water for a public bath in Ṭihrán and was, at the time, used as an underground dungeon in which criminals of the worst type were held.

On His way to the Síyáh-Chál, Bahá’u’lláh was forced to walk barefooted and bareheaded under the burning rays of the midsummer sun. The crowd that stood along the road treated Him with extreme rudeness. Yet His face reflected His inner calm and His heart was filled with love even for those who wished Him harm. As He was nearing the Síyáh-Chál, an old woman came out of the crowd with a stone in her hand. She had been so convinced that Bahá’u’lláh was a wrongdoer that she was totally unaware of the nobility and love shown forth by this extraordinary Prisoner. Her whole body shook with rage as she stepped forward and raised her hand to hurl the stone at Him. “Give me a chance to fling my stone in His face!” she pleaded as she approached Bahá’u’lláh. “Suffer not this woman to be disappointed,” were Bahá’u’lláh’s words to the guards as He saw her hastening behind Him. “Deny her not what she regards as a meritorious act in the sight of God.” Even in the midst of intense suffering, Bahá’u’lláh was not concerned with Himself. So great was His love for every human being that He would accept such abuse in order to bring happiness to the heart of a misguided but sincere old woman.

Story 2

Bahá’u’lláh finally reached the Síyáh-Chál. There He was imprisoned with several of the Báb’s followers. Their feet were placed in stocks, and around their necks were fastened extremely heavy chains. The air they breathed had the foulest of smells, and the floor on which they sat was covered with filth. No ray of light entered that dark dungeon or warmed its icy coldness. Yet the followers of the Báb were illumined by His teachings and their hearts were aflame with the fire of God’s love. They gladly accepted their sufferings and hoped to be among those who, each day, were taken out of the prison to be martyred.

Meanwhile, the house of Bahá’u’lláh was pillaged, and His lands and goods were taken away by the authorities. His dear family was left with almost nothing—no furniture, no belongings, no food—and most of their relatives and friends abandoned them out of fear. Only a few remained faithful to them, and one of Bahá’u’lláh’s loyal relatives helped his beloved wife Ásíyih Khánum and three children find a small house near the Síyáh-Chál where they were safe. The eldest was, of course, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Who was only eight or nine years old. Sometimes He would leave the house to run errands for His mother or go to the market. He would try to make His way quietly, knowing that there was great agitation in the city and that it was a dangerous time for any Bábí to be seen. 

Now, His mother had managed to save a few small precious things that they were able to sell. With the money, they could pay the jailors at the Síyáh-Chál to take a bit of food and drink to His beloved Father from time to time. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá longed to see His Father and one day He was allowed to enter the Síyáh-Chál. Still a young boy, He was carried on the shoulders of a servant. They went through a small, narrow doorway and then down two steps, beyond which ‘Abdu’l-Bahá could see nothing it was so pitch black. They were about halfway down the stairway when all of a sudden ‘Abdu’l-Bahá heard the blessed voice of His Father: “Do not bring him in here.” And so He was carried back up the stairs. ‘Abdu’l- Bahá waited outside the prison to catch sight of Bahá’u’lláh when He and His companions were brought up for a bit of air. How it pained ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to see the heavy chains that they had put around His Father’s blessed neck.

Story 3

So it was that day after day, night after night, Bahá’u’lláh and His companions sat in the darkness of the Síyáh-Chál. They were placed in two rows, each facing the other. Bahá’u’lláh had taught them certain verses which every night they would chant until the early hours of the morning. You probably remember the verses from the story you heard in our classes in the second grade. “God is sufficient unto me; He verily is the All-Sufficing!” one row would sing, while the other would reply, “In Him let the trusting trust.” With such courage and joy did they chant that their voices would reach the palace of the king. “What means this sound?” the king once asked with agitation. “It is the anthem the Bábís are intoning in their prison,” was the answer. The king kept silent and said no more.

For four months Bahá’u’lláh was held a prisoner in the Síyáh-Chál. The conditions of the prison did not improve, but He endured His sufferings with peace and calm. For, while His body was in chains, His spirit was free soaring in the heavens of nearness to God. Indeed, it was in these conditions of intense physical suffering that Bahá’u’lláh began to receive God’s Revelation, a Revelation that would continue to fill His soul for nearly forty more years. Bahá’u’lláh Himself has described those days:

“During the days I lay in the prison of Ṭihrán, though the galling weight of the chains and the stench-filled air allowed Me but little sleep, still in those infrequent moments of slumber I felt as if something flowed from the crown of My head over My breast, even as a mighty torrent that precipitateth itself upon the earth from the summit of a lofty mountain. Every limb of My body would, as a result, be set afire. At such moments My tongue recited what no man could bear to hear.”

One night, in a dream Bahá’u’lláh heard these glorious words:

“Verily, We shall render Thee victorious by Thyself and by Thy Pen. Grieve Thou not for that which hath befallen Thee, neither be Thou afraid, for Thou art in safety. Erelong will God raise up the treasures of the earth—men who will aid Thee through Thyself and through Thy Name, wherewith God hath revived the hearts of such as have recognized Him.”

How great is the Cause of God. How extraordinary are His power and might. The glorious Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh which is destined to change the fortunes of humankind had its beginning in a most desolate prison. The Sun of Truth rose from behind the clouds of the darkness of the Síyáh-Chál, stirring all of creation with its dawning light.

Introducing The Principal Theme

Welcome to Lesson 3 Grade 4.

So great is the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh, that, unlike any Revelation in the past, God sent another Manifestation to prepare humanity for the outpouring of His divine guidance.

In our last lesson, we spoke about the early years of Bahá’u’lláh’s life, and we were able to see how all the attributes through which we know God attributes such as love, justice, and mercy were apparent in Him from the youngest age. Those who knew Bahá’u’lláh as a child and a young person were convinced of His greatness. Of course, they could not have imagined then what future God had ordained for Him.

And, in the last lesson, you also memorized a most beautiful passage in which Bahá’u’lláh speaks of the source of His knowledge and wisdom. Everything that He revealed came directly from God; His knowledge was innate, not acquired the way we gain so much of our knowledge, day by day.

You know that, for thousands of years, humanity has awaited this great Revelation, the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh. So, when the time came, what did God do to prepare hearts to receive His Supreme Manifestation?

He sent to humanity another Manifestation, the beloved Báb. And what does the title ‘the Báb’ mean?

It means ‘THE GATE’.

In the very title that He chose for Himself, the Báb was telling the people of the world that He was the portal to an even greater Revelation. We could say that, with His Declaration, centuries and centuries of promise came to an end and the doors to a new Era, the Bahá’í Era, were opened.

The teachings of the Báb helped large numbers in Persia to recognize that it was time to leave the past behind and enter a new stage in the life of humanity. Again and again, the Báb spoke of Him Whom God would make manifest, and He urged His followers to cleanse their hearts of egotism, ambition, jealousy, and hatred and to be humble, pure, and prayerful so that they would be able to recognize Bahá’u’lláh when God made Him manifest.”

 The Báb knew, of course, that His Dispensation was to be a short one. His purpose was to prepare the way for the coming of the Promised One of All Ages, and His love for Bahá’u’lláh was so great that He accepted untold suffering in His path.

 Today, you will memorize the words of Bahá’u’lláh in which He pays tribute to the Báb and testifies to the truth of His Revelation. Some of the stories you heard in Grade 3 show how courageously and vigorously Bahá’u’lláh arose to champion the Cause of the Báb.

Do you remember what happened at that conference of Badasht?

 Why was it so important?

Until then the followers of the Báb had clung to many of their old beliefs. At the Conference of Badasht, they made a break with the past and began to follow the laws laid down by the Báb. It was Bahá’u’lláh Who had guided the conference and helped those heroic souls come to this decision and see that a new Day was dawning in the life of humanity.

This historical episode describes events leading up to Bahá’u’lláh’s imprisonment in the Síyáh-Chál. It consists of essentially three stories, all of which were included in the Grade 3 lessons: Mullá Ḥusayn’s visit to Ṭihrán, Bahá’u’lláh’s journey to His ancestral home in Tákur, and the Conference of Badasht.

Bahá’u’lláh was twenty-seven years old when, on 23 May 1844, the Báb declared His Mission to Mullá Ḥusayn in the city of Shíráz. You remember that, some three months later, after the Báb had appointed His chosen disciples, the eighteen Letters of the Living, He sent Mullá Ḥusayn on a special mission. He gave Mullá Ḥusayn a scroll of His Writings and instructed him to go to Ṭihrán. He told him to beseech God, that he would be enabled to recognize the splendor of the secret hidden in that city. You know that Mullá Ḥusayn’s search led him to a school for religious studies in Ṭihrán. There he took a room and met a student from the district of Núr who eagerly received the good news of the Báb’s Declaration. It was through this student that Mullá Ḥusayn learned about Mírzá Buzurg’s illustrious Son, Who was renowned for His virtuous life, His high attainments, His loving- kindness, and generosity. “

What is His occupation?” Mullá Ḥusayn asked the student.

“He cheers the disconsolate and feeds the hungry,” the student replied.

“What of His rank and position?” inquired Mullá Ḥusayn. “He has none apart from befriending the poor and the stranger,” the student answered.

“What is His name?” Mullá Ḥusayn asked at last. “Ḥusayn-‘Alí,” was the reply.

Of course, this illustrious Son was none other than Bahá’u’lláh, and Mullá Ḥusayn realized that his search had ended. You remember that he then gave the student the scroll of the Báb’s Writings, wrapped in a piece of cloth, and asked him to deliver it to Bahá’u’lláh the next day. Here is the story of how Bahá’u’lláh received that scroll.

The student took the scroll and departed, at daybreak, to carry out Mullá Ḥusayn’s request. As he neared the house of Bahá’u’lláh, he saw standing at the gate one of His brothers, Mírzá Músá, whose title is Áqáy-i-Kalím. The student explained to him the reason for his visit, and Áqáy-i-Kalím led the young man into the presence of Bahá’u’lláh. He asked them both to be seated. Unfolding the scroll, He began to read aloud some of its passages. He had read but a page when He turned to Áqáy-i-Kalím and proclaimed the Divine origin of the words of the Báb and testified to the truth of His Revelation. He spoke no more. As the young man was preparing to leave, Bahá’u’lláh requested him to take to Mullá Ḥusayn, as a gift from Him, a loaf of sugar and a package of tea and to convey to him His appreciation and love.

Filled with happiness, the young man left and hurried back to Mullá Ḥusayn. He delivered to him the gift and message from Bahá’u’lláh. No words can describe the joy with which Mullá Ḥusayn received them. With a bowed head, he accepted the gift and fervently kissed it. The young man was greatly puzzled. Why did Mullá Ḥusayn behave in this way? Why should he show such happiness upon receiving so small a gift from Bahá’u’lláh? What could be the cause of such devotion?

A few days later, Mullá Ḥusayn left Ṭihrán. As he said goodbye to the young student, he told him to say nothing about his meeting with Bahá’u’lláh to anyone and to pray that God would protect Him. Mullá Ḥusayn spoke of the great trials and difficulties that would eventually come to the followers of the Báb, and he urged the student to raise the call of a New Day and to proclaim the Báb’s Message. Mullá Ḥusayn then set out for a nearby province. As for this young student, you should know that he became a most devoted follower of the Báb and joined Mullá Ḥusayn some four years later at the fort of Shaykh Ṭabarsí. When he and his fellow Bábís were captured by a deceitful and dishonest enemy, he was offered freedom if he would deny the truth of the Báb’s Revelation; the young student refused and was put to death in a most cruel manner.

Now, after Bahá’u’lláh received the scroll of the Báb’s Writings and accepted His Message, He immediately arose to promote it. The first journey He undertook to teach the new Faith was to His ancestral home in Tákur in the district of Núr. The people of Tákur greeted Bahá’u’lláh with much enthusiasm. At first, they were eager to learn about the court of the king in Ṭihrán, but Bahá’u’lláh had little interest in discussing such things. Instead, He began to proclaim the Message of the Báb. His arguments were so logical and His speech so eloquent that soon many became convinced of the greatness of this new Cause.

As it happens, one of Bahá’u’lláh’s own uncles became jealous of the love and respect that the people were showing to Him. This uncle’s name was ‘Azíz, and he arose to oppose Bahá’u’lláh and challenge the truth of the Báb’s Revelation. But, of course, he had no success. So ‘Azíz went to a clergyman in the region, with vast knowledge of the Faith of Islám, in order to receive his assistance. He hoped to convince him that Bahá’u’lláh was a threat to Islám and that there was need for immediate action. The clergyman, afraid of confronting Bahá’u’lláh, ignored the pleas of ‘Azíz. But the Message that Bahá’u’lláh had brought to the region was rapidly spreading, and the students of this clergyman began to wonder, too, about this new Cause. Should not the clergyman visit Bahá’u’lláh and find out more about the Message He was proclaiming? At last he decided to send two of his most trusted students to visit Bahá’u’lláh. He would accept whatever these two decided. Well, perhaps you remember that these two students, upon hearing the words of Bahá’u’lláh, immediately accepted the Cause of the Báb, and they never returned to their teacher. News of their acceptance of the new Faith traveled fast, and people from different parts of the province of Mázindarán journeyed to Núr in order to enter the presence of Bahá’u’lláh. Alas, the clergyman refused to listen to the words of Bahá’u’lláh and failed to recognize the Báb. But, through the power of His utterance, Bahá’u’lláh won the hearts of great numbers, and hundreds were brought under the banner of the Faith. So it was that Mázindarán, and the district of Núr in particular, became to the first in all of Persia to embrace the Divine Message.

Of course, you know that gradually the Message of the Báb spread to all parts of Persia, and the entire country was thrown into a state of commotion. Thousands began to follow His teachings, and this angered the leaders of Persia who feared they would lose their power over the people. The Báb was exiled to a remote part of Persia with the hope that His Cause would be forgotten. Persecutions against His followers were on the rise. Among those who were affected was the great poetess Ṭáhirih, one of the Letters of the Living. For a woman to be so outspoken was very dangerous, and the government tried to silence her by spreading lies about her. As a result, not even the members of her own family would associate with her. She was kept in a house in a town some distance from Ṭihrán, and her movements were watched. So one day Bahá’u’lláh sent a trusted companion to rescue her and bring her to Ṭihrán. He instructed this companion to have his wife accompany him. She should go to the house where Ṭáhirih was kept and pass to her a letter from Bahá’u’lláh. This was done and, at the appointed hour, Ṭáhirih left the house with the woman. They made their way to the gate of the town, where Bahá’u’lláh had arranged for three horses to be waiting for them. Taking a route not followed by many, they reached Ṭihrán on horseback in the early morning hours before anyone could notice them enter the city. Ṭáhirih was brought to the home of Bahá’u’lláh, where she remained safe and was able to meet with other trusted followers of the Báb.

Not long after, Bahá’u’lláh sent Ṭáhirih with a number of believers towards Badasht. He Himself later joined them there. You know, of course, that Badasht is where the momentous conference took place at which the followers of the Báb announced their independence from Islám. It is where Ṭáhirih, the essence of purity and chastity, appeared one day before the men gathered without a veil covering her face, which, according to the beliefs of the time, all women had to wear in public. Some of the Bábís present felt that she had brought shame to herself and the new Faith. Quddús was visibly angry. But Ṭáhirih, unshaken and aglow with joy, addressed her companions with eloquence. She called on them to break with the past—with its religious dogmas, its traditions and ceremonies. It was Bahá’u’lláh who eased the tension that arose between Quddús and Ṭáhirih. It was He Who, during those momentous days, gave them both the titles by which we now know them. The title Ṭáhirih means “the Pure One”, and Quddús means “Holy”. He Himself was, from that  time forward, to be known by the name of Bahá. Later the Báb would reveal a special Tablet for each one of those who had attended the Conference of Badasht, addressing them by the names they had received on that occasion.

After the conference, the believers departed together for Mázindarán. However, when they stopped along the way to rest near a village, they were attacked by the ignorant inhabitants. They were forced to flee and scattered in different directions. Bahá’u’lláh continued on to Núr in Mázindarán. Soon, news of the Conference of Badasht reached Ṭihrán, and the king and his ministers became aware of the events that had taken place and the role played by Bahá’u’lláh at the conference. Now the king ordered His arrest. Accordingly, an order was sent to one of the officials of Mázindarán, instructing him to take Bahá’u’lláh as a prisoner and bring Him to the capital Ṭihrán. As it happened, the order arrived one day before that very official was to give a reception for Bahá’u’lláh, to Whom he was devotedly attached. He was greatly distressed and chose not to tell anyone. The next day news reached Mázindarán that the king, Muḥammad Sháh, had died; the arrest order was no longer valid.

NARRATOR: The story of Mulla Husayn as he tries to find a trace of His Beloved in Tihran is fascinating! The hand of providence brought him into close contact with a certain Mulla Muhammad who became immensely attracted to Mulla Husayn and the Message of the Báb. The story, recorded in the words of this Mulla Muhammad is in The Dawn-Breakers, The conversation was as follows:

MULLA HUSAYN: What is your name, and which city is your home?

MULLA MUHAMMAD: My name ‘is Mulla Muhammad, and my surname is Mu’allim. My home is Nur, in the province of Mazindaran.

MULLA HUSAYN: Tell me, is there today among the family of the late Mirza Buzurg-i-Nuri, who was so renowned for his character, his charm, and artistic and intellectual attainments, anyone who has proved himself capable of maintaining the high traditions of that illustrious house?

MULLA MUHAMMAD: Yea, among his sons, now living, one has distinguished Himself by the very traits which characterized His father. By His virtuous life, His high attainments, His loving-kindness, and liberality, He has proved Himself a noble descendent of a noble father.

MULLA HUSAYN: What is His occupation?

MULLA MUHAMMAD: He cheers the disconsolate and feeds the hungry,

NARRATOR: The eagerness with which Mulla Husayn asked his questions, and the sense of delight with which he welcomed every particular answer given to him, greatly surprised Mulla Muhammad. Turning to Mulla Muhammad, with his face beaming with satisfaction and joy, he once more enquired:

MULLA HUSAYN: I presume you often meet Him?

MULLA MUHAMMAD: I frequently visit His home.

MULLA HUSAYN: Will you, deliver into His hands a trust from me?

MULLA MUHAMMAD: Most assuredly,

NARRATOR: ( figures can act this out as the narrator speaks) Mulla Husayn then gave Mulla Muhammad a scroll wrapped in a piece of cloth, and requested that he hand it to Husayn-‘Ali, Baha’u’ llah the next day at the hour of dawn. ‘

NARRATOR: At the break of day, Mulla Muhammad set out to deliver the scroll. As he approached the house of Bahá’u’lláh, he recognised Bahá’u’lláh’s brother Mirza Musa, who was standing at the gate, he communicated the object of the visit and he went into the house, then reappeared bearing a message of welcome. Mulla Muhammad was ushered into His presence, and presented the scroll to Mirza Musa, who laid it before Bahá’u’lláh. Unfolding the scroll, He glanced at its contents and began to read aloud certain of its passages. He had read a page of the scroll when turning to His brother, He said: ‘Musa, what have you to say? Verily I say, whoso believes in the Qur’án and recognizes its Divine origin, and yet hesitates, though it be for a moment, to admit that these soul-stirring words are endowed with the same regenerating power, has most assuredly erred in his judgment and has strayed far from the path of justice.’ He spoke no more. Dismissing Mulla Muhammad from His presence, He charged Mulla Muhammad to take to Mulla Husayn, as a gift from Him, a loaf of Russian sugar and a package of tea, and to convey to him the expression of His appreciation and love.

Mulla Muhammad: Here is the gift and a message from Bahá’u’lláh.

MULLA HUSAYN: (With joy and exultation receives the gifts with a bowed head from Mulla Muhammad and fervently kissed it. Then take Mulla Muhammad and kissed his eyes, and say) My dearly beloved friend! I pray that even as you have rejoiced my heart, God may grant you eternal felicity and fill your heart with imperishable gladness.

NARRATOR: Mulla Muhammad was amazed at the behaviour of Mulla Husayn. What could be, the nature of the bond that unites these two souls he thought? What could have kindled so fervid a fellowship in their hearts? Why should Mulla Husayn, in whose sight the pomp and circumstance of royalty were the merest trifle, have evinced such gladness at the sight of so inconsiderable a gift from the hands of Bahá’u’lláh? Mulla Muhammad was puzzled by this thought and could not unravel its mystery. A few days later, Mulla Husayn left for Khurasan.

Mulla Husayn: ( as he is saying goodbye) Breathe not to anyone what you have heard and witnessed. Let this be a secret hidden within your breast. Divulge not His name, for they who envy His position will arise to harm Him. In your moments of meditation, pray that the Almighty may protect Him, that, through Him, He may exalt the downtrodden, enrich the poor, and redeem the fallen. The secret of things is concealed from our eyes. Ours is the duty to raise the call of the New Day and to proclaim this Divine Message unto all people. Many a soul will, in this city, shed his blood in this path. That blood will water the Tree of God, will cause it to flourish, and to overshadow all mankind.

…So one day Bahá’u’lláh sent a trusted companion to rescue her and bring her to Ṭihrán. He instructed this companion to have his wife accompany him. She should go to the house where Ṭáhirih was kept and pass to her a letter from Bahá’u’lláh. This was done and, at the appointed hour, Ṭáhirih left the house with the woman. They made their way to the gate of the town, where Bahá’u’lláh had arranged for three horses to be waiting for them. Taking a route not followed by many, they reached Ṭihrán on horseback in the early morning hours before anyone could notice them enter the city. Ṭáhirih was brought to the home of Bahá’u’lláh, where she remained safe and was able to meet with other trusted followers of the Báb.

Introducing The Principal Theme

Welcome to Lesson 2 for Grade 4.

The Manifestation of God is a very special Being, exalted above our comprehension. In the last lesson, (lesson 1) we spoke about all the wonderful activities that took place around the world to celebrate the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh over two hundred years ago.

We saw how, in every country, people are rejoicing in the knowledge that God has not left humanity alone, without direction and guidance, but has made His Will and Purpose known to us through His Supreme Manifestation. Bahá’u’lláh has given humanity all the teachings and principles we need to build a beautiful, peaceful, and united world. With each passing day, more and more people are inspired by Bahá’u’lláh’s vision of the future, and they want to know what they can do to help bring this vision into the world.

Do you remember what the participants in the village in India did?

 With this class, we are going to start learning about the life of Bahá’u’lláh. Today, I will tell you a few stories about the early years of His life. Some of them you have probably heard before. As you listen to these stories, think about the attributes of God, like His loving-kindness, His wisdom, His forgiveness, and mercy.

How do we know about these attributes? We learn about them through His Manifestation, do we not? And then we try to reflect these qualities in our lives— we try to be just, as He is just; we try to be kind, as He is kind, we try to be forgiving, as He forgives. Today we will see that, even in His childhood, Bahá’u’lláh possessed all these heavenly qualities. So remarkable was He that those around Him were convinced He had been brought into the world for a special purpose. They could not know, of course, what this mighty purpose was!

What we should always remember is that, though Bahá’u’lláh was born into this world and lived at a specific time in history, He was a very special Being, filled with the Spirit of God. Later in this class, you will begin to memorize a beautiful quotation in which Bahá’u’lláh tells us that He was made manifest, not at His own choice, but by the Will of God. All the attributes and teachings revealed through Him came directly from God. His knowledge was innate, not acquired through schooling, as, indeed, we will see in the stories of His life.

Does anyone remember from Grade 3 what it means that God’s knowledge holds all things? Day by day, you and I acquire more and more knowledge, and we hope to know more today than we did yesterday and to learn more tomorrow. We learn at school; we learn from our parents; we learn from the books we read and from the things we do. But Bahá’u’lláh did not need to acquire knowledge, as do you and I. He did not go to school like other children. Nor did He involve Himself as He grew in the many debates about the truth that was common, especially among the clergy of His time. All knowledge was with Him. He knew exactly what humanity needs, and we will create a new world, as we put His teachings into practice.

Historical Episodes

The historical episode in this lesson focuses on the early period of Bahá’u’lláh’s life, prior to His acceptance of the Báb’s message. There are several stories that you can read in this lesson,  this first one is about Baha’u’llahs Fathers dream

The stories we read will give us some insight into all the heavenly qualities that were present in Bahá’u’lláh from childhood.

We already know that Bahá’u’lláh had innate knowledge. Listen carefully to the story and see what heavenly qualities you can find.

STORY ONE

Bahá’u’lláh Fathers Dream

Bahá’u’lláh was born on 12 November 1817, in Ṭihrán, the capital of Persia. You already know that He was given the name Mírzá Ḥusayn-‘Alí at birth and that Bahá’u’lláh is His title, meaning the Glory of God. His father, Mírzá Buzurg, was a distinguished nobleman who held a high-ranking position in the court of the Persian king. His mother’s name was Khadíjih Khánum. In addition to a house in the capital city, the family had property in the district of Núr. Núr is situated in the province of Mázindarán, in the northern part of the country. You will hear the name “Mázindarán” often, as so many events related to the history of the Faith took place there.

From an early age, Bahá’u’lláh showed signs of greatness. One night, while He was still a small child, His father, Mírzá Buzurg, had a very special dream about Him. In the dream, he saw Bahá’u’lláh swimming in a vast ocean. The light radiating from His body illuminated the waters. His long black hair floated in all directions, and a multitude of fish followed Him, each holding on to the end of one hair. He moved freely and unhindered. Impressed by the dream, Bahá’u’lláh’s father called a man known for his insight and asked him to explain its meaning. The man told Mírzá Buzurg that the ocean was like the world and that, alone and single-handedly, his Son would achieve victory over it. And, as with the many fish that gathered around Him in the dream, the people of the world would be thrown into great tumult and would cling to Bahá’u’lláh for safety and would follow Him. But Bahá’u’lláh would be protected by the Almighty, the man assured Mírzá Buzurg, and nothing would harm Him. This dream made His father even more passionately devoted to his Son. It convinced him of the high destiny that awaited Bahá’u’lláh, and he took every measure possible to ensure His welfare and to surround Him with his loving protection.

STORY TWO

The Puppet Show

As Bahá’u’lláh grew, His extraordinary knowledge and wisdom became more and more apparent. He did not attend school and only received some instruction at home. Young boys with high-ranking fathers like Mírzá Buzurg generally had tutors who instructed them in, for example, good manners, horseback riding, and calligraphy, a beautiful form of handwriting, but they did not teach much else. Yet Bahá’u’lláh displayed a wisdom and knowledge that went well beyond His age, and all those who knew Him were astonished by His maturity.

In a Tablet, Bahá’u’lláh Himself relates a story from His childhood. He explains in the Tablet that He was attending the wedding celebration of one of His older brothers. As was the custom in Ṭihrán at that time, a great feast was held for seven days and nights. On the last day, a puppet show about a famous king was performed. A tent was set up in the courtyard as a stage for the performance. All the guests gathered in front of the tent, while Bahá’u’lláh sat in an upper room overlooking the courtyard, from where He watched the puppet show.

A few small figures, He tells us, appeared on the stage, announcing the arrival of the king. “His Majesty is coming!” they called out. Several more figures then appeared. Some were sweeping, and others were sprinkling water in preparation for the king’s arrival. Soon after, the town crier entered the scene and told the people to assemble for an audience with the king. Several more figures then came onto the stage and took their proper places. Finally, the king made his grand entrance. Wearing a crown on his head, he walked slowly and majestically and seated himself on a throne. Shots were fired, trumpets blasted, and the tent was filled with smoke. When the smoke cleared, the king, still seated on his throne, was seen surrounded by ministers, princes and state officials, all standing in his presence. The king gave some orders, which were immediately carried out. Then he received news of a rebellion, and he sent his troops off to fight. Bahá’u’lláh watched the entire scene with great interest. At last the show ended and the curtain was drawn.

Some twenty minutes later, Bahá’u’lláh saw a man come out from behind the tent. He was the man in charge of the show and was carrying a box under his arm. “What is this box?” Bahá’u’lláh asked him. The man replied to Bahá’u’lláh that everything He had just seen in the show was now contained in the box—all the elaborate decorations and devices: the king and his throne, the princes and the ministers, their pomp and glory, their might and power. This statement made a great impression on Bahá’u’lláh, and He declared that, from that day forward, all the trappings of this material world—with its vanities and conflicts, its titles and honors—were nothing more than a show for Him. Like the play and pastimes of children, they would pass away and matter not.

STORY THREE

The Unjust Tax Collector

By the time Bahá’u’lláh was a youth, He was renowned for His keen mind, His excellent character, His generosity and compassion. He was capable of solving the most difficult problems and of answering the most complicated and profound questions. And He displayed unmatched courage in standing up for what was right. You may remember from your studies last year the story of the tax collector. At that time in Persia, taxes were not regulated by law according to each person’s earnings. Corrupt officials, princes and, sometimes, even the king took advantage of people and forced them to pay more than what was fair. Now, one such tax collector, who did not walk in the ways of honesty and justice, came to see Bahá’u’lláh’s father and demanded that he pay a certain amount. The first time this happened, His father paid the official without any protest. But then the tax collector came back a second time, asking for more money, and a third time, asking for still more.

Bahá’u’lláh carefully observed the situation and decided to do something about the unfair behavior of the tax collector. Although he was still a youth, He rode His horse for two days until He arrived at the capital city, Ṭihrán. There, he went to see the highest officials in the court and presented His father’s case. His presentation was so convincing, His words and arguments so eloquent, that an order was issued to dismiss the unjust tax collector.

STORY FOUR

The Greedy Prime Minister

Though Bahá’u’lláh possessed such extraordinary powers and capacity, He never sought a position or prominence as a young man. When His father passed away, He was asked to follow in his footsteps and assume his position in the court of the king. But Bahá’u’lláh refused. He chose instead to devote His energies to the care of the poor and the defense of the weak. At the age of eighteen, Bahá’u’lláh married Ásíyih Khánum, and their home became a shelter for all. To everyone, they showed gracious hospitality, and they had many guests to whom they offered meals in their warm and loving home.

Of course, as a member of a noble family, Bahá’u’lláh was also in constant contact with the highest officials of the land and saw their arrogance, treachery, and greed. To disagree with them could be very dangerous. Yet He was always able to avoid the treachery of the men who exercised such earthly power. The Prime Minister of the king was one such man. Like all those who knew Bahá’u’lláh, the Prime Minister greatly admired Him. He would often visit Bahá’u’lláh in His home and address Him with respect. But, at the same time, he was jealous of Bahá’u’lláh and, when the occasion arose, could not control his greed. This is what happened.

One day the Prime Minister passed through an estate that was owned by Bahá’u’lláh. The Prime Minister was charmed by the beauty of the property. He decided he wanted to own it, and Bahá’u’lláh was instructed to sell the property to him immediately. In those days, when the Prime Minister wanted something for himself, no one dared to say “no” because he was so powerful. “Had this property been exclusively my own, I would willingly have complied with your desire,” Bahá’u’lláh told the Prime Minister. Many villagers lived on the property, and Bahá’u’lláh explained that a number of other people, rich and poor, young and old, shared ownership with Him and that the Prime Minister should also seek 

their approval. Since this would be difficult, the Prime Minister now tried to obtain the property through illegal means. Learning of his plans, Bahá’u’lláh managed again to prevent the Prime Minister from seizing the land. He was furious and referred the matter to the king.

To the Prime Minister’s surprise, the king told him to forget the matter, and this made him even angrier. He summoned Bahá’u’lláh to his presence and tried to discredit His good name. He accused Bahá’u’lláh of plotting against him. And what was the evidence he gave for this plot? All he could say was that Bahá’u’lláh welcomed too many guests to His home, and this had to be a sign that He was making some plan against him. Not even he, the Prime Minister, received as many guests as did Bahá’u’lláh. “Gracious God!” Bahá’u’lláh responded. “Is the man who, out of the abundance of his heart, shares his bread with his fellow-men, to be accused of harboring criminal intentions?” The Prime Minister made no reply. He had no argument and everyone could see that Bahá’u’lláh was innocent. Those who knew about this matter marveled at how miraculously He had emerged safely from such a dangerous situation. Surely it was Divine protection, they thought, that ensured His safety time after time. And we know, of course, that nothing could happen to Bahá’u’lláh if it was not ordained by God Himself.

Welcome to the first set of lessons for Grade 4. These lessons seek to expand our understanding that, in the incomparable figure of Bahá’u’lláh, God has revealed to humanity His greatest Name, the All-Glorious.

It is amazing to be alive at this moment in history, in this promised Day of God, when He Who is the King of Kings, the Glory of God, has been made manifest.

This first lesson is intended, above all, to uplift our hearts and to make us aware that, in every corner of the globe, the life and teachings of Bahá’u’lláh are the cause of celebration; everywhere people are raising their voices in praise of Him and joining hands to build the peaceful and united world He envisions.

To set the scene for the ensuing discussions, let us review what we have learned in the third grade.

Can you name some of the Manifestations of God that have brought the light of His knowledge to the peoples of the world down the ages?

You have already learned that the Manifestations of God are very special Beings Who come from time to time to guide humanity along the right path.  They reflect the attributes of God as a mirror reflects the light of the sun.  You have also learned that the Bab was a Manifestation of God who prepared the way for the coming of Baha’u’llah.  Baha’u’llah is the Manifestation of God for today, which means that, by knowing Him, we are able to gain knowledge of God and that, by obeying Him, we live in accordance with the Will of God.

Humanity is like a child who needs to be educated.  When a child has learned all that there is to learn in one grade, he must move on to the next.  In this new grade, he will have another teacher, as wonderful as the previous one, who will teach him what he could not have understood before.  If a child is too attached to the old teacher and decides to reject the new one, he will never progress.  In the same way, when a Manifestation of God appears on earth, it is the duty of the followers of all earlier Manifestations to accept Him and learn to live according to His teachings.  You already know that we live in a special Day, the beginning of a New Era in the long history of the human race.  Baha’u’llah is the Manifestation of God that teaches us how we are to live in this Age.  It is now the duty of the followers of every religion to investigate the claims of Baha’u’llah, recognize Him, and follow Him, as He is the new Teacher spoken about for thousands of years Whose teachings will enable us to build the promised Kingdom of God on earth- a peaceful and prosperous world civilization based on the principles He has brought to humanity.

Every one of God’s Manifestations has spoken of a time when humanity would forever lay down its weapons and learn to live in peace and happiness. For centuries, people everywhere have anxiously awaited the promised Day of God. We are fortunate to know that this new Day has dawned. God’s promise to humanity has been fulfilled by Bahá’u’lláh, and people from every race, religion, and nationality are uniting around His vision of humanity as one family. His teachings show us how to replace estrangement with loving fellowship, tyranny with justice, conflict and contention with peace and tranquility. Although we have heard many accounts related to Bahá’u’lláh in the past, now in Grade 4, we will learn the story of His life and much more about His Revelation.

But before we begin our lessons on His life, let us go back only a few years to 2017. Does anyone know what special anniversary took place that year? It was the two hundredth anniversary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, and all over the world, in every land, people celebrated His life and teachings. I am going to share with you a map that shows all the countries in the world where celebrations were held, and you will see a few photographs from different events. Then I will tell you some stories about these festivities.

In this lesson, you are also going to memorize a quotation in which Bahá’u’lláh declares that the promised Day of God has come and that the sun of His bounty is shining resplendent for all to see. And we know that soon, as more and more people begin to follow His teachings and work together side by side, God’s Kingdom will be established on earth. Bahá’u’lláh is the King of Glory.

In the rural parts of India, whenever there is a special celebration, homes are decorated with “rangoli”. Rangoli are large, colorful designs created on the floor or ground, using petals from flowers, colored rice and sand, and sometimes dry flour. Usually, the mother and daughters will rise early in the morning, clear the space for the rangoli, outline the design with chalk, and then fill it in with the petals and colored rice and sand they have prepared.

Now, in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, there is a small village of about one thousand people, and to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, many families decorated the ground in front of their homes with rangoli. Can you imagine how beautiful the village looked as the festivities were approaching?

In preparation for the celebration, fifty-five people fasted as a sign of their love for Bahá’u’lláh. When one fasts, one stops eating for a period of time so that, instead of thinking about the things of this world, one’s thoughts are focused on the spiritual. Then, as nightfall came, lamps were lit in front of almost all of the homes, and a group of youth went through the streets of the village, playing drums and inviting everyone to the celebration.

At 8:00 in the evening, the festivities began. Prayers were chanted, songs were sung, skits were performed, presentations were given. Youth arose and spoke of Bahá’u’lláh and His teachings. So joyful were the festivities that they continued into the early morning hours of the next day. But the celebrations were not yet over. The villagers organized a series of prayer meetings for the next two days. Some eighty homes were opened for this purpose, and around four hundred people altogether gathered in prayer during those two days, to offer their gratitude to Bahá’u’lláh and ask for His continued guidance and blessings.

In one town in Turkey, the friends spent weeks preparing to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh. They rented a theatre hall for the occasion, sent out invitations, and prepared a program that included a presentation on His life and teachings. There were even posters about the event. Now, a week before the celebration, one of the organizers received a telephone call. It was a woman who had gone to the theatre hall for the gathering only to find out no one was there. She had learned about the Blessed Beauty, Bahá’u’lláh, she said, five years earlier. Every day since, she explained, she remembered Him in her prayers. She was so excited to be able to participate in the celebration of His Birth that she had mixed up the dates and had come to the event one week early!

In Tanzania, more than 13,000 people participated in festivities, held in some ninety places all around the country, to celebrate the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh. Try to imagine what kind of preparations were needed. Work had to begin weeks and weeks in advance, and of course, at every step, the friends received divine confirmation. Here are accounts from two communities.

A few families from a village near Lake Victoria realized that the community would need more money in order to carry out its plans. It had organized two days of activities and expected many guests from other villages, who would need to be fed and offered a place to stay. The community also wanted to rent a screen on which to show a most beautiful film about Bahá’u’lláh called “Light to the World”. So what did these families do? They decided that, since they lived near a lake, they would raise ducks and then sell them when the market was good. Thankfully, the number of ducks multiplied, and a month before the celebrations they were sold. Together with other contributions received, the community had all the funds it needed to take care of its many guests.

In the capital city of Dominica, a beautiful island in the Caribbean, a group of youth painted lovely murals on the outside walls of the Bahá’í Center as a gift for the bicentenary celebrations. The community rallied around the project, with many people donating supplies such as paint. The building had not been repaired for several years, and since the youth began by scraping off the old paint, they decided they would also strengthen the foundation of some of the walls with stones collected from the ocean. And that was most fortunate, for, a few weeks before the celebrations were to begin, a strong hurricane tore through the island, and many people sought shelter in the Center. When the storm was over, they saw that the Center was one of the few buildings left standing, and it became a place of refuge for those who were homeless and a hub of activity as work began to rebuild the island.

On the occasion of the bicentenary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, the Universal House of Justice wrote a most beautiful message addressed to all those who celebrate the Glory of God. You know, of course, that Glory of God refers to Bahá’u’lláh. In the message, the House of Justice states clearly that Bahá’u’lláh is God’s Manifestation for today and that He has given us the teachings we need to bring about peace and live in unity. It invites people everywhere to participate in building a better world.

Now, in many places, the message was read and studied when people gathered to celebrate Bahá’u’lláh’s Birth. One such meeting took place in a town in Uganda. A large hall was selected for this purpose, and many local leaders, including religious leaders, attended. There was much chatting among the participants, and the hall was filled with noise, until the message started to be read aloud. Then everyone fell silent, as they listened to the words of the House of Justice. The message captured their attention completely. At the end, some of the local leaders asked the Bahá’í friends to give them copies so that they could study the message again later themselves. Even one of the religious leaders decided that the members of his church should read it. “It is the duty of all people to respond to the call of Bahá’u’lláh,” said one leader who, before the bicentenary events, knew very little about the Bahá’í Faith.

Jamundí is a town located in the southwestern region of Colombia. Some thirteen gatherings, attended by more than 1,600 people, were held throughout the town to celebrate the bicentenary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh. One of these was carried out by students and teachers at the Simmons Bahá’í School, which, for many years, has offered primary and secondary education, as well as a kindergarten program, to young people in the town.

Now, just before families and friends were set to arrive, a dark cloud formed in the sky and a strong storm moved in, flooding the streets. With great concern, the children and teachers waited for their guests, but the rain was not stopping. Suddenly, a stream of people started arriving, all in wet clothes. The venue was filled to capacity, and the program began.

Lights lit up the room, and children intoned prayers and quotations by heart. The sweetness with which they raised their voices to recite the words of the Blessed Beauty touched the hearts of those present. But the most special moment was yet to arrive. The narration of the story of the life of Bahá’u’lláh was under the care of a group of children in fifth grade. Little by little, and with astonishing confidence, each child took a step forward and narrated a small fragment of the life of this Divine Educator. “Bahá’u’lláh, the Manifestation of God for this Age, was born in Ṭihrán, in a faraway country called Iran,” noted the first. With a firm step, a little girl moved towards the microphone to add, “Ever since He was young, Bahá’u’lláh displayed extraordinary signs and qualities for a child His age.” The next one made reference to the dream that Bahá’u’lláh’s father had, in which his Son appeared to be swimming in a great ocean and from each string of His hair a fish was attached. “The multitude of fish followed Him without being able to hurt him,” concluded the boy. The most moving moment was when the smallest child spoke about the sufferings of Bahá’u’lláh. He stood in front of the microphone and kept quiet for a moment. “I don’t know why they hurt Him so much when He was such a good person,” said the little boy with a quivering voice, which made it difficult for him to continue. At that moment, his teacher stepped towards him and embraced him tenderly. “They placed such a heavy chain around His neck” was all the child could add. Tears flowed down the faces of some of the guests. The dignified manner and the emotion with which the children recounted the story of the Blessed Beauty moved deeply the hearts of the more than seven hundred people who attended the event.

The presentation was followed by a burst of jubilation when the children danced in colorful costumes and hats to rhythms representative of Colombia: bambuco, currulao, torbellino, and cumbia. At the end of the event, the parents expressed how happy they were to have found out more about the life of Bahá’u’lláh and the teachings He brought to the world.

Santiago is the capital of Chile, and over five million people live in that city. It is surrounded by majestic mountains and, at the foot of one of them, just above the city, a beautiful Bahá’í House of Worship has been built. It took many years to finish the work. Perhaps you have seen a picture of it. Thankfully, it was completed about a year before the bicentenary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, in time for the celebrations. There was a gathering in the Temple itself, and a choir sang so beautifully that their voices lifted up to the heavens the souls of everyone present. Outside, on the Temple grounds, there was an exhibition on the life of Bahá’u’lláh, and streams of visitors came to see it. The mayor of the city even came to accept a gift of 2,000 trees from the Bahá’í community, as part of a project to help keep the environment healthy. It was a most joyous time.

In the capital city of Azerbaijan, the government gave consent for the Bahá’ís to hold their bicentenary celebrations in the most important cultural center in the country! What is more, the government employees who worked for the center helped the Bahá’ís with all aspects of the program. An orchestra played music, while a slide presentation with pictures of Bahá’í Holy Places was given. A film about Bahá’u’lláh, “Light to the World”, was watched by more than three hundred and fifty people in complete silence. No one even got up from their seats once. Journalists, writers, lawyers, professors—people from all walks of life were there. But it was the participation of one of the state ministers that was most encouraging. Again and again he urged the Bahá’ís to work harder to spread Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings. He was greatly impressed to see that there were Tablets revealed by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá about the country, and he suggested that they be widely circulated so that the entire population could learn about the Faith. “You are involved in very profound and far-reaching processes,” he told the Bahá’ís. “It is not an easy task and will take quite a long time, but there is no other way. Sooner or later humanity will turn to Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings.”

And, the same thing happened in a large city in another part of the country. The program, too, was held at an important government facility with the help of its workers. Around two hundred people attended, and an official from the government opened the program with a short and passionate speech. In a booming voice, he invited the entire hall to celebrate “the coming of the new Prophet of God for this Age!”

Many of the celebrations for the two hundredth anniversary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh were held in theatres and large halls. Most, however, took place in small neighborhoods in cities across the globe. Can you imagine how many celebrations people had in their homes and in local meeting places? It would be impossible to count them all. But let us listen to the story of two.

East Timor is an island nation, north of Australia. There, about thirty youth decided to host a program in their neighborhood. They made almost all the preparations themselves, and as the day approached, they slept very little, so busy were they in finalizing their plans. To their great joy, more than one hundred people from the neighborhood came to the program. The youth performed dances and skits and gave short talks. They spoke very clearly about who Bahá’u’lláh is and what they had learned about His teachings from Bahá’í institute courses. With tears in their eyes, they humbly thanked their tutors with small gifts for helping to change their lives. All the guests were happy that day, and the youth were greatly encouraged by the success of the event. They had indeed showed courage in talking so openly and directly about Bahá’u’lláh and His Mission.

On the other side of the world, there is another large island, called Prince Edward Island, which is part of Canada. A Bahá’í, new to a neighborhood in the capital city, wondered what to do as part of the festivities for Bahá’u’lláh’s Birth. The idea came to host a simple dinner, to which some of the neighbors would be invited to bring a little food and learn about Bahá’u’lláh. So, colorful invitations were made that read: “Celebrating the Vision of Bahá’u’lláh: Unity of all races, religions and cultures”. After delivering the invitations door to door, the new neighbor waited to see how many people would come. The apartment was not very big, but a large crowd was not expected. When the time arrived, however, a stream of people flooded into the apartment. There was hardly any space to move! After sharing food together, they had a lively discussion about unity and read quotations from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh about the oneness of humanity. Everyone agreed that they should have more discussions of this kind.

The BriBri are a people in Central America. A large number of the BriBri people reside in a mountainous region called Talamanca, which is part of Costa Rica today. When the Bahá’í community of Talamanca thought about how many people might come to the bicentenary celebrations, the friends realized that their local center would be too small. They decided to build a new structure which could hold all of their expected guests. And so work began. Men, women, young and old—everyone helped. They bought enough wood to make a long structure with a high ceiling and a metal roof. The space could hold up to five hundred seats, and at one end, they built a stage.

Now, have you ever seen pictures of the beautiful gardens around the buildings at the Bahá’í World Centre? Well, the friends in Talamanca beautified their new building with similar gardens, and there were nine-pointed stars made of plants and colorful flowers on the grounds around the building and paths lined with white stones. As the long-awaited day approached, work intensified and excitement mounted. Food was prepared, and transportation arranged for some of the participants. And guess how many people came, from all over the region: 514! The building was filled to capacity!

For two days, they celebrated. There was music, singing, drama, and dance. When the time came on the second day to watch the film about Bahá’u’lláh, “Light to the World”, hearts were so transformed that no one could hold back their tears of joy and gratitude. And, at the end, everyone rose—even the older folks—as the two-day celebration came to a close with dancing to the song, “La Fiesta del Pueblo”.

Mirror

  • The children work in pairs to mirror each other’s actions.
  • Select one person to be the mirror for the first round and then swap after a few minutes.
  • After both children have had a turn, change partners.
  • Lay down some ground rules, so that the mirror doesn’t feel obliged to do something they are not comfortable with (e.g. no fingers up noses).
  • You could set the scene, e.g. they are doing their morning routine, hosting a holy day, doing their exercises or practicing a dance.

Make a Rangoli (Based on vignette 1)

Rangoli are large, colorful designs created on the floor or ground, using petals from flowers, colored rice and sand, and sometimes dry flour. Usually, the mother and daughters will rise early in the morning, clear the space for the rangoli, outline the design with chalk, and then fill it in with the petals and colored rice and sand they have prepared. Make your own on the floor or use a large piece of cardboard to create.

Story About Steadfastness

Perhaps you know that Bahíyyih Khánum was the younger sister of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. She was only six years old when their beloved Father, Bahá’u’lláh, was arrested and sent to prison by an unjust government, that was fearful of the truth of the divine message He proclaimed. Her family had been one of the wealthiest in the city. Now all of their possessions were taken away. At times she had only a handful of flour to eat in place of bread.

When her Father was released at last and forced by the government to leave their homeland, Bahíyyih Khánum and her family set out on mules for the city of Baghdád, in a neighboring country. The journey took three months in the bitter cold of winter. Never again would she return to the land of her birth.

For ten years, the family remained in Baghdád, where Bahíyyih Khánum passed the rest of her childhood. Then, suddenly, her Father was ordered by the authorities, still threatened by His growing influence, to leave Baghdád, and Bahíyyih Khánum, now a young woman, went with her family, first to far off Constantinople and then to Adrianople. The danger was at its height. Opposition to her Father grew, and eventually, an attempt was made on His precious life.

After almost five years in Adrianople, living under such stress and strain, dear Bahíyyih Khánum was uprooted once again when the government banished her Father to the prison city of ‘Akká. For some forty years, that gentle soul lived with her family as a prisoner among the worst of criminals within the walls of the desolate city.

During that time the Father she so loved departed this world, and with His passing, it now became Bahíyyih 
Khánum’s duty was to support her beloved Brother, Who had been appointed the Head of His Father’s Faith. Many of their friends and relatives, jealous of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, turned against Him. But Bahíyyih Khánum faced each blow with quiet patience and fortitude.

And when ‘Abdu’l-Bahá passed into the next world many years later, Bahíyyih Khánum became the greatest supporter and staunchest defender of His grandson, young Shoghi Effendi, as he took over the duties that fell on him as his Grandfather’s successor. Bahíyyih Khánum was now an old woman, some seventy years of age. Her life had been filled with turmoil and upheaval. It moved from adversity to adversity, from calamity to calamity. But her spirit remained constant, and her heart always filled with the love of God. She was steadfast and firm. The dignity and joy, the kindness and grace, that were hers as a child stayed with her until the final days of her life.

A Helping Hand

Ask the children to form pairs and hold hands with their partners. First have them walk around the area in pairs, with their eyes open. They should begin with tiny steps, and their steps should gradually become longer and longer. Each pair should take care not to bump into anyone. Then, one partner in each pair should shut his or her eyes, and they should repeat the walking exercise. Now if they are to avoid bumping into anyone, the other child will need to guide his or her friend. Tell them they must use signals given by touch alone. You should help them devise the signals before they start—for example, one squeeze of the hand could mean “stop”, two “go back”, three “turn right”, and four “turn left”.

Rock Painting 

Let the kids paint big rocks that could be used as decorations outside, or smaller rocks that could be used as paperweights. Attach the quote to the botton of the rock or write Stadfastness on it .

Hot Rock Coloring 

Heat smooth rocks in an oven at approx 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Take them out with pot-holders and set them on thick mats of newspaper to work on. The kids color them with crayons while they are warm so the crayons melt onto the rocks. This is really fun but make sure the kids are old enough to understand how not to burn themselves on the rocks while they are hot.

Story About Patience

Li Xin was very fond of peaches. They were one of his most favorite foods. Every day, he would bring a peach with him to school and eat it during his lunch break. He enjoyed every bite, but he always threw away the pit, with the seed inside.

One day, Li Xin’s class was learning about seeds. This gave Li Xin an idea. He would plant a seed from his peach and help it grow into a tree! At lunchtime, he saved the pit from his peach and wrapped it in a piece of paper. When school ended, he raced home and asked his father to help him find a place to start growing his tree. His father reminded him that he would have to wait for the pit to dry before he could get the seed out. Still, Li Xin wanted to plant the pit right away. “Li Xin,” said his father, “if you don’t have the patience to dry the pit, how will you have the patience to wait for the seed to sprout?” So Li Xin set the pit out to dry.

A few days later, Li Xin was finally able to crack the pit and pull out the seed. His mother showed him a corner of the yard where the tree could grow big and tall. Li Xin dug a small hole and dropped in the seed, then covered it with a mound of moist earth. He grinned with excitement. His tree was finally on its way!

Every day, Li Xin would visit the mound, hoping to see some sign that the seed had sprouted. But no sprout appeared for weeks, and Li Xin grew disheartened. Seeing Li Xin’s concern, his mother asked him what was wrong. “My seed is not growing,” Li Xin said. “I wonder if I will ever have a tree.” “Well,” said his mother, “this seed has a lot of growing to do. In that way, it is very much like you. When you were born, you were just a tiny little thing and all you did was eat and sleep. And now look at you! You are a young boy, walking, talking, and thinking for yourself! This tree may take many years to grow, but, if you care for it well, then someday you will be able to sit in its shade and enjoy its fruit.” Thinking of this, Li Xin grew hopeful again. He knew from his class that a seed had to go through many changes before it could even become a sprout.

Then, one spring day, Li Xin went out to visit the mound, as he always did, and to his great excitement, he saw a tiny green sprout poking up through the earth! His tree was growing! He ran to his neighbor, who was a farmer, and told her the exciting news. She gave him advice on how to care for the tree while it was so young and vulnerable, and he listened to her every word, eager to nurture it as best he could. “Soon I will have many peaches to give you as thanks for your good advice,” said Li Xin. But the neighbor just smiled. “Li Xin, do you remember how you had to be patient while you waited for the pit to dry?” Li Xin nodded. “And do you remember how you needed even more patience while you waited for your seed to sprout?” Li Xin remembered this, too. “Well,” said the neighbor, “it will take even longer before your sapling becomes a tree and sometime after that before it gives fruit. It could be years before the tree is ready to produce any peaches for you to enjoy.”

And so Li Xin cared for the tree and tended to its needs as it grew from a sprout to a sapling and from a sapling to a tree. Little by little, it grew taller and broader, just as he did. And then one day, as Li Xin returned from school, he saw the tree’s first peaches beginning to emerge where only blossoms had been before. Once again, he felt the joy that filled his heart when the seed had first sprouted. And once again he knew that he would have to exercise patience. For it would be some time still before the peaches would be ready to eat.

Find the Starter

Choose one child to go out of the group. While he or she is gone, the rest of the class picks another child to be “the starter”. All the children then follow the actions of the leader. For example, if he or she claps, everyone else does the same. If he or she starts waving goodbye, so do all the others. The one who was sent out must look carefully and try to discover who the leader is. A faithful soul never forgets all the bounties that God has bestowed on it; it never ceases to love God. It is out of our faithfulness to Him that we always try our very best to follow His teachings and obey His laws, even when it becomes difficult. So it is that we work hard to serve others and to do worthy deeds, with no other thought than to attain His good pleasure. For the faithful soul, there is no greater joy than striving to please God. Let us memorize this quotation of Bahá’u’lláh:

Happy is the faithful one who is attired with the vesture of high endeavor and hath arisen to serve this Cause.

Story About Faithfulness

When ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was a young boy, His family, which was part of the nobility of Persia, had a servant by the name of Iṣfandíyár. He was very loyal to the family, and they trusted him a great deal. When the authorities, out of prejudice and ignorance, had ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s beloved Father, Bahá’u’lláh, arrested, all of the family’s possessions were taken away. They were left with nothing, and anyone close to Bahá’u’lláh was in danger. Still, Iṣfandíyár continued to look after the family. Knowing that many officers would be looking for Iṣfandíyár, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s mother urged him to leave the city. But Iṣfandíyár would not leave.

“I cannot go,” he said, explaining that he owed money to many shopkeepers for items he had purchased. “How can I go?” he asked. “They will say that the servant of Bahá’u’lláh has bought and consumed the goods and supplies of the storekeepers without paying for them. Unless I pay all these obligations, I cannot go. But if they take me, never mind. If they punish me, there is no harm in that. If they kill me, do not be grieved. But to go away is impossible. I must remain until I pay all I owe.”

For one month Iṣfandíyár went about in the streets and bazaars, selling small things he owed. When he had paid every last debt, he went to the family and said goodbye, for he knew he could stay with them no longer. A minister agreed to take him in and protect and shelter him during this dangerous time.

Many months later, Bahá’u’lláh was released from prison, and He and His family were exiled from Persia by the authorities. They went to Baghdád, a city in the neighboring country. Iṣfandíyár, ever faithful to Bahá’u’lláh, journeyed to Baghdád to ask whether he could once again serve in His household. Bahá’u’lláh said to him, “When you left us, there was a Persian minister who gave you a place to stay when no one else could give you protection. Because he gave you shelter and protected you, you must be faithful to him. If he is satisfied to have you go, then come to us; but if he does not want you to go, do not leave him.”

Of course, Iṣfandíyár was so upright, so trustworthy, and loyal, that the minister did not want him to go. “O Iṣfandíyár!” he exclaimed, “I am not willing that you should go, yet, if you wish to go, let it be according to your own will.” But Iṣfandíyár remembered Bahá’u’lláh’s words. He remained in the minister’s service until, sometime later, the minister passed away and Iṣfandíyár once again returned to the family he so loved, serving ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to the end of his days.

Who Is Knocking at My Door

Blindfold one of the children, who should be seated on a bench with his or her back to the rest of the class. Now point to another child. He or she should go up to the blindfolded child and knock on the bench. The child who is seated says, “Who is knocking at my door?” The other, trying to disguise his or her voice, responds, “It’s me!” The seated child tries to guess who is knocking. The blindfolded child has three guesses, and then another child is given a turn.
