Pinterest tries: Mothers day card #2

I love to Pin stuff on Pinterest and I have many boards dedicated to paper crafts, templates, cards, journal ideas, mini scrapbooks, brag books and more.

Some of the pins are my own and lots of them are just suff I find that I love but never seem to do more with these pin than file them away.

How about you? Do you do the same? One of the things I am looking for is easy crafts for kids and families. The one below seems to be very easy so here goes!

The craft I am going to attempt is a simple craft from Pinterest that is a flower shaped Mothers day craft and I will include my template version.

By the Way, if you need another Mothers day Card then get my twirling heart Mothers Day card template here.

The list of items you will need are:

  • 2 flower shape cut out of card stock, one white and one painted or cut from coloured cardstock
  • popsicle stick painted green
  • small photo that fits in a 2.5 inch circle
  • glue
  • small clothes pin/peg
  • pen to write message
  • Use my FREE template available in SVG, PDF,Studio 3

Assemble the card using my template:

  • If using my template, cut out the pieces by hand (PDF). OR if use your machine cut out pieces using the files included (STUDIO 3 or SVG files included)
  • Put the white flower with the writing on the bottom
  • Glue the pink flower to the centre of the white flower
  • Glue the photo to the centre of the pink flower
  • Glue the flowers to Popsicle stick
  • Add little clothes pin to look like a leaf. You can clip a Mothers Day greeting to the stem.

Assemble the flower without using my template:

I get it, you love to do it from scratch yourself.

  • Cut out two flowers the same size
  • cut out a small circle for the centre of the flower
  • cut out a photo to fit the small circle or write a message in this circle.
  • Attach a photo to small circle
  • paint the popsicle stick
  • Paint one flower any colour you like
  • On the white flower write your messages
  • Glue the painted flower on top of the white flower
  • Glue the circle with the photo on top of the painted flower
  • Glue both flowers to the painted popsicle stick
  • Add a small clothes pin.

Finishing Up:

to finish up I am adding a heart to the centre of the flower and not a photo as I did not have a photo small enough. Here is what I did:

If you want to use my Template, you can download it HERE.

I hope you enjoyed this craft. think its pretty easy as I took me 5 minutes to cut and 2 minutes to assemble .

Easy Craft for Kids: Mothers Day Card

Mothers day is fast approaching and I know some of you amazing dads want to help the kids make a gorgeous card for mum. Or Maybe you are just amazing parents and want to make a card with the kids for a grandparent. I am going to use Pinterest as my best friend and resources and try a few of the cards that I have pinned on my board Easy Crafts For Kids. I will also try to keep track of how long it takes!

The first craft I am going to try is a twirling heart and can be used not just for Mothers Day but also for Valentines day, or any occasion/ lesson for heart theme . The cards original video can be seen via the link twirling heart.

Material Needed

  • You will need a piece of cardstock 8.5 x 11 inches any colour. You can use any size but my instructions and template attached will be for these sizes.
  • piece of pattern paper 8.5 x 5.5 inches
  • 2 Red hearts same size
  • A piece of string approximately 8 inches long
  • something round to draw circle.
  • tape
  • glue
  • scissors
  • pen to write your message

Steps

Fold 8.5 x 11 inch cardstock to be a 8.5 x 5.5 inch card. You can orient the card to be any direction you like (landscape or portrait)

8.5 x 11 inch cardstock folded in hald

Use something round like a lid of a jar or a drinking glass to draw a circle on the front of the card. I used a mug that was about 3.5 inches in diameter

Glue heart on to string, centring the heart on the string as much as possible so that there is an even amount on top and bottom of heart.

Place the second heart on top of the first heart so that string is sandwiched between the two hearts.

Place heart on the front of the card, centred as close as possible over the cut out circle.

Tape the string on top and below circle

Glue the patterned paper on the front of the card so that the string is hidden

Twirl the heart and close the card.

Give the card to your Mum

When the card is opened, the heart will spin. Twirl the heart and close the card and when opened again, it will spin…. continue as much as you like.

From Start to Finish

With my PDF template to print, cut out and glue it took 15 minutes. Without my template it took longer as I had to draw the circle, and hearts and then cut out : this took about 20 to 25 minutes. Using my silhouette to cut took under 10 min.

My free template of this card can be downloaded as an SVG file, A studio 3 file or PDF here.

Shadow box card in 10 min

Have you seen those awesome shadowbox cards that are 3 dimensional and look like an artist, graphic designer and engineer must have collaborated to make it? Also You can buy these cards for $2.99 and more but why would you when you can make your own?

If you have not see theses cards then you are in for a treat because not only will someone love getting one from you, I will give you the basic template and you can customize as you see fit.

Shadow Box Card

Ok now lets back up a little and give you some ideas of what I am talking about and then we will go into what you need to make these cards. Below is a Christmas Santa card that I made a few years ago. Notice that there are layers and this gives the 3D effect. These cards are called shadowbox or tunnel cards.

Christmas Shadowbox card
Christmas Santa delivering toys

This Santa Card what cut on a Silhouette Cameo Machine, so for those of you who own a machine like this, I will show you how to use my template to make any card you like.

For those of you who don’t own a machine, I will show you how you can still make beautiful tunnel cards, just will a little bit extra work like the one below. This will be a separate post that I will put up later. In the mean time, download the free template and use any pictures or embellishments ….for all you know, you may end up with some tricks to show me!

So, for those of you with machines like Silhouette Cameo and Cricut, the first thing you will need is my template for the card itself. You will need to open the SVG file in Silhouette Studio. see my post here.

If you can’t open SVG files let me know and I will send the studio files.

Now that you have the template, think about what you want the card to be about and spend a few minutes looking for free images on Google. I wanted a beach scene as summer is on the way. Here are some of the images I found. I used the trace feature to trace them and then resized for my card.

In my free template, I included 2 images that looked like “hills” or “clouds” I use these to create different heights for each layer and welded it to my frame. Remember to ungroup the fold lines (dashed lines) before you weld.

Next I arranged my images and welded to card pieces. Below are the pieces cut out and compared to the template with no images welded.

Assemble

  1. To assemble the card bend all the fold lines.
  2. Lay the back piece flat
  3. Glue the tab of inner card so that it is up against the fold line. The tabs of each card is great for spacing if you place them right up against each other.
the inner card is glued so that the tab is up against the fold line
the next layer is glued right up against the edge of the last.
you can see the layers here
This is the back. the tabs have glue on then and we close the large brown piece on top and press down.

Ok so 10 minutes for those of you who own a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut. For those of you who do not own a machine then this will take about 20 to 30 minutes

Shadow card with beach scene
Shadow Box: summer at the beach

The photo above is the free template to download ( see below) with free images I found on public domain welded on to the card.I used different colour cardstock so that I could show the layers better. You can use one colour or many colours. You could add cut out pieces, for instance to the palm tree, add green leaves etc.

The Template has the following pieces:

Front and Back pieces of Shadow box card. Dashed lines are fold lines.
The inside parts that “slot in” to the main frame of the card.

Extra Back piece that can have a background scene

How to use the template:

To use this template with Silhouette or Cricut,

  1. Download and open the file.
  2. Gather the images you want to use in your card from files you have or free images on Google. If they are PNG images you need to trace and make them Studio or SVG
  3. Make sure each section is ungrouped from the dashed lines (the fold lines)
  4. Place your image on card and use Weld (Silhouette) /Attach (Cricut) to attach the image to the card so that it is one piece. The template has a few extra pieces that can be used in a merge and will form hills or clouds.
  5. Group dashed lines to card before you move around
  6. Send to cut.

To Use Without a cutting machine

  1. Download the PDF file.
  2. Print the images of the Shadow box onto cardstock.
  3. Cut out the pieces including the inside rectangles of the pieces.
  4. Use scrapbook embellishments or photos printed on cardstock and cut out. The template has a few extra pieces that can be used as hills or clouds.
  5. Glue images to the inside of the frame ( the cutout section rectangle section)

How to Assemble

  1. The front and back of card glue together to form a box that is open on top and bottom.
  2. The inner pieces slide in to this open frame box in the order that you like and the tabs glue to the sides.
  3. Note that the tabs should all be glued to one side first and bent in the same direction.

Enjoy

Bahá’i inspired Journal

Love journaling but can’t seem to find a great Baha’i Journal? We are developing a Baha’i Inspired Journal just for you!

Yep! Here is how it happened: a few of us on a Facebook group page got talking about the lack of a good Bahá’i journal and Lo and Behold a collaboration was born! We were looking to release it at Naw-Rúz but there was so much more planning and organizing to do than we thought, so we have only March and April done! Yeah for us!

For sure Ridván will see it available for download or print.

We think that this will make a great gift ideas for those who love to journal. If you need additional ideas for Holy day gifts, check out the easy pendant idea!

What does it look like?

At first we were playing around with each month having different colours but now we are thinking to just keep it simple.

Here is how we planned the layout:

  • The cover is a mandala with ta 9 pointed star.
  • The inside cover has a quote
mandala with nine pointed star
Image we will use for the cover of the Journal.
  • Next pages are the yearly Bad’i Calendar and the page opposite are the important Baha’i dates
  • Each month starts with a mandala to colour
  • Then there is a monthly calendar with all the important events happening like feasts and holy days
  • Each month will have a place to set goals for the month and the action steps for each.
A place to set some goal for the month
  • Then we saw a beautiful info-graph on what is needed to lead a Baha’i life and we turned this into a habit tracker for each month
  • We all need to remember the things that made us smile along the way and keep track of the random idea and thoughts. We gave these a page for themselves in a very free form manner.
  • I am always trying to remember a book I wanted to read or did read.
  • A piece of music or a podcast I want to remember
  • An event to attend
  • A service project I am involved in or would like to do: this page is a visual representative of that.

Weekly view:

  • For the weekly view we have each week of the month at a glance.
  • A planner for meal plans and exercise

Daily View Records :

  • The day, the Baha’i month and if there is a feast or holy day.
  • There is a quote inserted in the banner section not shown here
  • Quotes you love of want to remember
  • Appointments
  • Tracking a habit
  • Tasks
  • Meals
  • Who you are praying for
  • Space to record personal, work and home
  • A space to reflect

Then it is a repeat of these pages for each month.

We would love any feedback on this journal.

Download your free March / April and if you want to sign up for notice when the journal is complete then please do so here.

DIY easy craft in 10 minutes: Kids can help!

I am always on the look out for an easy craft that kids can help with. I like crafts that kids, can do that are not just paper plates, tissue paper etc. Those types of crafts are nice but sometimes I want an extra wow factor. This year I was looking for a Naw-Rúz gift.

For those who have never heard of Naw-Rúz it is the Baha’i New Year, which falls in March, sometimes it is on the 20th and sometimes on the 21st. Many other people around the world celebrate this time of year also.

This year Naw-Rúz on the 21st  March and it marks the Vernal Equinox in the Earth’s Northern  Hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the South—that day when the sun’s light strikes the Equator directly and illuminates every continent equally.

Shopping for Naw-Rúz is like shopping for any major holiday where gifts are exchanges. The shopping experience can be frustrating, fun, overwhelming, happy, sad… you name the emotion we most likely experience it. Like everyone during a festive season, we went looking for the perfect gifts. Although we did get great gifts, it felt like they did not reflect the holiday in a special way. For those of you with young kids, well I think online shopping looks very appealing right now and you are thinking there is no time to make anything personalized. Well read on and I promise this is a 10 minute easy mini craft for you and the kids.

My 6 easy steps to making a personalized pendant

So, here is what I decided to do in a few really easy DIY steps that even if you have newborn triples it will be finished in under 10 minutes, I promise (not including the purchase of course!) .

It took me less than 10 minutes to do 6!

Step One

I went to Michaels and found theses very cute pendants: 2 in a pack for about $14. The pendants are in the jewlery making section and I am sure any craft store will have something that you can use that is similar. Michaels always has a coupon so make sure and use it. This time it was 40% off

Package of 2 pendants: one round one square

Step 2

Next I printed a photo of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá the Son of the Baha’i Faiths founder Baha’u’llah) and printed it on white regular cardstock. You can of course use any photo or symbol.

I choose the photo and not just crystals or little heart charms because I remembered my two friends discussing the best gift they received as children. I am sure the gifts my friends discussed was not a photo in a costume jewelry pendant like mine, but they loved this gift from their mum! I think it was because it was so small and wearable and different from the other gifts they had received.

The photos of Abdu’l-Baha needed to be small enough to fit the frames.

If you buy the same frames, the size for the square frame is 2/8 inch and the round is 3/8th diameter.

Here is a link to my file for you to download and print. Or you can find a photo you like better by searching Google make sure that the usage rights allow for reuse.

Step 3

I cut the photos by hand. There is no need to be exact as they are so small little imperfections really do not show.

TIP: for cutting anything round, move the paper not the scissors, it is much easier that way.

Step 5

The next step is to remove the little mockup photo that came with the frame. I used this weeding hook I had with a piece of sticky tape, this grabs the insert really easily and pulls it out. You can also use a straight pin to push the photo out from the bottom of the frame

Step 6

The final step, put the images into the pendant. The square image inserts on the top. The round pendant opens on the side with a magnetic closure. The round pendant is also glass on two sides so the back of the photo shows. I decided to put a Baha’i symbol so the pendant can be worn either way. I have included it in my file for download. Cut the photo of `Abdu’l-Bahá and The Greatest Name and stick back to back then insert into the round frame

You are done!

You can stop here. What do you think? pretty easy DIY project right? I think it turned out beautiful.

I went and did a few extra steps.

Optional

I have some blank little bags that I will put the pendant in and so I will decorate them.

You can find little bags in the dollar store if you want to venture out or use my little rectangle box template: It should take about 5 to 10 minutes to print, cut and glue it together.

I have a few heart shaped boxes  in red that I painted white with dollar store craft paint. I am still deciding if I like this container for this special gift.

If you want a box to put your gift it, here is a link to my square template box with a lid.  Decorate it as you like.
